Austin's POV:
I was stunned. I followed Rory and Chris back to the hospital and was completely in shock when they took me to the room that held the sick babies that were often born too early with some form of issues. Chris walked over to an incubator that held a tiny baby girl and I watched his smile grow as she reached out for his finger.
"That should be me," I thought to myself.
"This is Violet Grace," he whispered, his gaze completely fixated on her.
"And this is Devon Jasper," Rory mumbled as she stood next to the other incubator that held a gorgeous baby boy with my eyes.
I was overwhelmed. All three of them were so beautiful. I walked over to Rory and looked in at my son. He was still so tiny and was hooked up to something that was producing oxygen. The sight of them like this made me want to cry and I've only been here for 5 minutes, Rory and Chris have been by their side since they were born. I grabbed Rory's hand and gave it a squeeze. I knew we weren't together but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss her.
She let it rest there for a minute before slowing retracting it. I gave her a curious look and watched as she shook her head. "I can't, Austin."
"Okay Miss Smith," a cheery voice suddenly chirped. I spun around and saw a young, attractive and overly excited nurse. Rory smiled and walked over to meet her, Chris eagerly following behind. "So, they're perfectly healthy," she sighed in relief. "As you know, their predicted due date has just passed and they now weigh the normal amount if they had been born then."
I watched Chris pull Rory into a tight embrace as she completely broke down. I noticed Chris was having a hard time stopping his tears too. "Thank you," Rory sobbed.
"It has been our pleasure," the nurse replied with a smile. "Now, do we have names?"
Chris nodded. "We've got Violet Grace and Devin Jasper."
The nurse smiled and jotted the names down. "Beautiful," she murmured. "And um, last name?"
"Carlile," I jumped in.
"Carlile-Smith," she said at the same time but adding her last name.
I glared at her and shook my head. "They're my kids!"
"Yeah well, you weren't around! They get both names," she protested. "End of story, Austin."
I watched Chris' face fall and then he pulled her into him and whispered in her ear. I didn't know what he asked but it ticked me off that they were seeing each other again. She was mine, we have twins and I can't believe she's going to stay with him and tear our family apart.
"Austin, I'm sorry," she whispered. "But you can't put them first, just like you couldn't put me first. They deserve better than that. Plus, they'll stay out of the fans' eyes for a little while longer if they've got my last name."
I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. "Rory, I thought you knew that my fans always came first. I wouldn't have let you go through with this if I'd known you weren't comfortable with that."
"Well, you never clarified it so now they're here and Chris and I will take care of them. You can visit and once they're older we can have joint custody," she replied quietly. "Their last name will be hyphenated as Carlile-Smith," she mumbled to the nurse. She nodded and scurried off, leaving us to deal with our personal problems.
"Rory, I will take you to court on this," I protested, immediately feeling guilty as I watched her face change from sad to shocked.
"You'll take me to court," she asked in a disbelieving tone. I nodded. "Well then, you can tell the court that you would never put your family first, you would be on the road all the time, we're not married, you've got a new girlfriend, a woman that I don't even know, and my newborn twins are better off with you! I'd love to see how they take that news," she ranted. "Don't test me, Austin. I will destroy you. I've had enough experience in PR to know how to destroy someone's career."
