Chapter 12
****************
Tyler’s hand rubbed small circles on my back and I moved my lips to his. Our bodies moved in symphony and I moaned, “Tyler,” I closed my eyes.
“What?” He asked and stopped kissing me. That was not Tyler’s voice I thought. My eyes snapped open and I was no longer with Tyler. Blake had invaded my dreams.
I woke with a start. What had just happened?
I showered and dressed in a daze. When I saw Aunty, she stopped me. I must’ve looked about as bad as I felt because she asked me, “What’s the matter?”
“Boy troubles,” I said.
“Oh, well good luck then,” Aunty said and ran towards the door. I stood there gawking. That was so unlike her, this whole day seemed turned upside down. It scared me how right I was. Spencer didn’t arrive at my door that morning to take me to school. I checked my phone and sure enough, it said Friday. Spencer always picked me up on weekdays.
I looked for missed calls but nothing showed up. I figured that I should call him and see if he was just running late.
*ring ring*
No answer, thenn Spencer’s prerecorded voice broke in.
“Hello! If you’re calling because you love me then I love you too! Hope your day is filled with rainbows and sunshine, call me back. Love you!”
“Spencer! Hey, I was just wondering if you were running late or if you were sick or something… Anyways, I’m going to drive myself to school, bye.” I hung up and walked out to my car. I got in and started my car. I pushed the gas and slowly steered out of the driveway. I steered towards the school, accelerating as I went. Out of nowhere a Porsche sped around the corner towards me. I swerved to one side and slammed the brakes. Nothing. I slammed my foot down harder, pushing the brakes all the way down to the floor. Still nothing. The Porsche trained on me, it wanted a collision.
I veered the wheel to one side, but the Porsche connected with the back of my truck. I heard the grinding sound of metal on metal and I clamped my hands on my ears, my biggest mistake. I lost control of my truck and the Porsche shoved me into the creek that ran near my house. My truck rolled down and crash landed in the water. I hadn’t gotten hurt, but my side of the truck was in the water. As the water flooded in I cursed and fumbled with my seatbelt. It wouldn’t come out. I pulled harder, but it was jammed.
I looked up to see someone come out of the Porsche. I was completely shocked when I saw her lithe figure and her auburn hair. Everything was the same, but her usually cheerful brown eyes were filled with rage, confusion, and a few other emotions. The water flooded up to my knees and around my left shoulder.
“Emma?” I shouted.
She glared down at me before disappearing behind the Porsche. I could see the car edging closer to the edge of the bank. God, she was planning to crush me!
“Emma! Emma? What are you doing?” The Porsche stopped moving. She came back out.
“What am I doing? Getting what I deserve!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“Spencer and I can never be together, thanks to you.” Silent tears rolled down her cheeks. “You’re always there. We can’t be together because Spencer loves you!”
“But I love Tyler!”
“No you don’t, Lindsay! Stop trying to kid yourself, everyone knows you hate his guts! You love Spencer! You do, I see the way you watch him! It’s how I watch him—“ she stopped. “And this is the only way to get him to look at me. When we kiss his eyes are on you. One time, he even told me he loved me… but he said YOUR name!”
“Emma, please, we’re best friends!”
“A best friend could never do what you do to me,” she ripped off her necklace that had a ‘B’ on it and threw it in my open window. “You’re dead to me, Lindsay Fallhaven, and soon you’ll be dead to Spencer too.”
With that she walked back behind the Porsche and began to push again. The Porsche tipped over the side and crashed down onto the passenger side’s door. The old metal crumpled underneath the weight of the car. I screamed and closed my eyes.
Dying didn’t feel as bad as I thought it would. I was in pain, but not deadly pain. Water lapped on my face and I could hear sirens in the background. Heaven sure does feel small, I thought. I opened my eyes. The water in the creek had risen to my cheek. My stomach was being crushed between the crippled metal of the passenger side door and the driver’s door. My head must have been hit by the car too because blood flowed down my face.
“Is anyone alive down there?” someone yelled from above.
“Yes! Yes! Help me!” I shouted as loud as I could.
“We’re going to get you out, stay calm!” the man yelled. I could feel the weight being lifted from my stomach and I looked to see a metal claw pulling the Porsche off of me. The metal door was still digging into my side. I squinted at the bright light that was shining on me. It must be around noon, I thought.
“What’s your name?” somebody shouted down to me.
“Lindsay, Lindsay Fallhaven.”
“Who should we contact to meet you at the hospital?” I didn’t know what was with Aunty this morning, and I don’t know why she couldn’t be there for me. But I gave him her number. A team of people came down into the creek. They cut away at the door that was crushing me and hefted me out. I told them I was fine to walk, but nevertheless, a woman carried me up the side of the hill and set me on a gurney. They pushed me into the back of the truck and off I went. While I was in the truck a man asked me what happened. Though I didn’t want to rat out my best friend, she was crazy. I told him everything, except the details of why she did it. He nodded at the end. “You’re very lucky, that should’ve killed you.” The man said to me. I nodded.
When I arrived at the hospital Aunty was already in the waiting room.
“Lindsay!” she exclaimed, meeting me and taking my hand. “What happened?” I told her that I’d tell her later and they wheeled me into the room. They did some basics, but I was pretty much okay to go. I was out by four thirty in the evening. Then I told Aunty everything, even about Spencer and why Emma did it.
She sighed, “Well kiddo, I don’t know what to tell you, I’m just glad you’re okay,” she said with a smile. Yes, Aunt Kayley, a woman of compassion, I rolled my eyes. I took out my phone, but sadly that had not survived the dip in the pool. When we got home Aunty clicked on the TV and sat down next to me on the couch. My car was on the news, sunken in the creek with Emma’s sparkling Porsche sticking out of the side. The reporter stated that a young woman by the name of Lindsay Fallhaven had miraculously survived. It showed my picture and then stated that they were now questioning the suspected criminal.
I heard someone slam on their brakes outside and then a loud banging on the door.
Aunty rushed over and opened it. I could hear Spencer’s frantic voice, “Is she okay? What happened?” Aunty gestured to where I was sitting on the sofa and two triplets rushed in, the third walked in leisurely.
“Lindsay, are you okay?” I relayed, yet again, my story to the triplets. Spencer looked horrified, Tyler looked smug, and Blake looked tired.
“How could she?” Spencer sobbed.
“She… um. Maybe she should tell you herself,” I said, not really wanting to get involved.
“I’m just so glad that you’re okay, I thought that I’d lost you…” Spencer said,
“Aw, Spence,” I leaned over and kissed his cheek, “it’ll be okay.”
“What no kiss for me?” Tyler asked. I could see Aunty raise her eyebrows expectantly at me. I sighed and leaned towards Tyler. I cupped his face in my hands and kissed him on the lips, a good ten seconds. But the strangest thing happened. When I pulled away, I was gazing into Blake’s startled green eyes.
