I've Promised That Before
It had been exactly three and a half days since Lilliana had been released from the hospital, and to say she was taking it badly was an understatement. Her anxiety levels had passed a point that she's never gone to before. She was constantly on edge that Aiden was going to up to her at any given moment. It didn't make things any better that she could barely move without help because she was still on crushes.
The past three days had been extremely hard for her, but Lilliana wasn't going to let that stop her from moving on with her life. She still hadn't told anyone who had hit her, and, despite the fact that she had a feeling that Maribel had already figured it out, she knew that no one would come close to guessing that it had been him. No one had even seen their breakup coming. He had been such a prince to her, others would say. Why would she ever break up with him?
However, precisely three and a half days since Lilliana had been discharged, her worst fears came true. Aiden had managed to track her down while she was on her way to one of her classes. He had been waiting for the perfect moment to approach her, and it was finally that moment. Lately, if she wasn't in class, Lilliana had been with Maribel every time she was on campus. Aiden knew that he couldn't go up to her with Maribel around, and she finally wasn't, so he took his shot.
"Hey, sweetheart," Aiden's disgustingly sweet voice called out to his ex girlfriend.
At the sound of his voice, Lilliana felt all the blood in her body run cold. Her breathing became erratic, showing signs of a panic attack just waiting to happen. Her eyes shifted from side to side, scanning her surroundings. So many people around her, but the one person she needed most that moment was nowhere to be seen. Lilliana was absolutely frightened.
"Have you started to miss me yet?" The twisted brunette asked her, coming dangerously close to her, his hand latching onto her wrist.
All the harsh words that she had said to him a week prior got caught in her throat; she was too scared to even whisper a word in his direction. And thankfully, she didn't have to, because her beautiful best friend came to her rescue.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Maribel spat at Aiden, holding a cold tone. Within an instant, Maribel had managed to get in between Lilliana's smaller body and Aiden.
Lilliana was eternally grateful. The grip that Aiden had on her wrist had left her slightly bruised and she was scared to even think about what would've happened if Maribel hadn't come in time.
Aiden just smiled that twisted smile at Maribel, and it was then that she knew his intentions weren't to hurt Lilliana. He just wanted to test the waters. Besides, he was in a public space. He wasn't that stupid to hurt someone in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Maribel scowled at the horrible man in front of her, threatening him without actually saying any words. This was enough for Aiden, though, because the look in her eyes frightened him to his very soul and he began to retreat. He turned away and began walking in the opposite direction of where Lilliana was heading.
Meanwhile, poor Lilliana was having a full blown panic attack. She was barely managing to stand up straight with the crutches and MAribel had to hold her tightly to make sure she didn't collapse onto the ground. Maribel held her close, whispering soft words into her ears to soothe her.
"It's okay, honey. Everything is okay," she repeated over and over to Lilliana. "He's gone now."
"He's gone now, but what if he tried to come back?" Lilliana questioned, terrified about what he would do.
"Lils, you know how to stop him from coming back," Maribel said in a stern voice."
Lilliana nodded. She sighed. "I know."
It was finally time for her to tell everyone that Aiden had hit her.
So, with the encouragement and help from her best friend, Lilliana marched on over to the police station and made an official claim. They decided it was best for her to obtain a restraining order against him, which makes it even harder to hurt her. It took a long time and tons of paperwork, but Lilliana was happy that she decide to do it. It had seemed like ages since she had actually felt safe.
After the stressful day she had, al Lilliana wanted to do was sleep in her own bed and be with her best friend. So that's exactly what she did. The girls headed over to Lilliana's house and had an impromptu sleepover. They got into bed and snuggle together (as much as two people can when one of them has a cast on). They try to have a conversation, but both girls are too tired to speak, so eventually, nothing is heard in the bedroom besides their steady breathing. Maribel is almost fast asleep when she hears her best friend's voice.
"Everything is going to be okay now, right?"
Maribel's heart ached at the sound of how sad Lilliana sounded. The poor girl was broken inside and out. She starts to comb her fingers through Lilliana's brown locks, because she knows it always calms her down.
"Of course, Lils," she answers confidently. "He can't hurt you anymore."
"Okay, good. Please, I don't want to be alone again. Don't leave me alone again."
"Honey, I'll never leave you alone. I've promised it before and I'll promise it again and again if you need to hear it."
Lilliana's heart swelled up and she felt herself falling more and more in love with Maribel. This didn't feel like a little crush anymore. She was beyond conflicted about what she should do. She closes her eyes once more and tries to fall asleep with the feel of Maribel's heart beating so close to her own.
