We Will Grow Old As Friends
For the past week, Lilliana had been doing the exact same thing every single day. She began her mornings by being checked on by her nurses and being fed horrible hospital food. She spent all of the morning reading a book or watching something on her laptop. This continued on until lunch where one of her parents would come and visit her. They would stay for an hour or two, Lilliana being way too nice to tell them that she really didn't need them there. When they left, Lilliana would wait anxiously for Maribel, who had been spending all of her free time at the hospital, to arrive.
Whenever she was left alone with her thoughts, Lilliana would constantly question her feelings over her best friend and what to do with them. She eventually came to the conclusion that, yes, she had a very tiny, very insignificant, little crush on Maribel. It would eventually go away because that's what happens with crushes. She decided not to do anything about it because there was no use jeopardizing her relationship with Maribel over a small crush.
The night before Lilliana was going to be officially released, Maribel had decided to spend the night with her, the two of them having a sleepover type of night (or as close as you can get to a sleepover when one of you is in a hospital bed). The two had spent the majority of the night discussing old memories.
"I remember when I first met you!" Lilliana said, thinking back to her freshman year. "You were so cute with your pastel purple hair and your cute little bike with flowers in the basket."
Maribel's felt her heart climb up her throat as she heard her best friend describe her as "cute". She knew it was just a friendly term, but she couldn't help but feel as if something was brewing between the two of them as they continuously hung out throughout the week. She felt like Lilliana had been giving her signs that her feelings were reciprocated. But, she didn't want to ruin everything based on just that, so she kept quiet about it.
"Oh, I remember now!" Maribel grinned at her best friend. "You were this tiny, scared little thing on the first day of classes."
Lilliana blushed, feeling embarrassed at the old memory. "Okay, okay, topic change."
And with that, they talked about another memory. Every single thing the two had been through together. Eventually, the conversation had died down, neither of them wanting to talk about the recent events that had happened, only wanting to relive the happy memories. They both just sit in silence for a bit, neither of them having anything they needed to say. But that was okay. Nothing needed to be said between the two of them.
After awhile, Lilliana broke the silence. "Do you think we're going to be friends when we're older, Maribel?"
Maribel laughed quietly. "Do you honestly think you're getting rid of me that easily? Honey, we're going to grow old as friends. End of discussion."
Lilliana smiled softly. "I hope so. I can't imagine a life without you."
Maribel felt her heart race pick up again. It feels like when she first started crushing on her best friend. She felt as if there was nothing but the two of them on this earth. No one else. Not her parents, not Aiden, not even Gracie.
Gracie. Maribel had to remind herself that she was, in fact, in a relationship with someone who loved her very much. Which is why she decided to bring up her girlfriend in conversation.
"Hey, I completely forgot I promised Gracie that I was going to spend the night with her," Maribel lied, wanting to get out the hospital room that suddenly became too stuffy. She didn't trust herself to be alone with Lilliana without initiating anything.
Lilliana's smile faltered. She felt her heart break as she heard her best friend say these words. She couldn't even say anything because she knew that Gracie was actually a really sweet person who didn't have any ill intentions. "Oh, okay. Goodnight, Maribel. Tell Gracie I said hi."
And with that, Maribel was out of there, trying so very hard to calm her frantic heart in the elevator, while Lilliana was left all alone to deal with her growing feelings.
