So Which Path Will You Take
She knew that the letter Lilliana had sent her was supposed to make things easier, but Maribel couldn't help but feel as confused as ever. She started to weigh the pros and cons in her head. Lilliana was something that she had wanted every since she had met the girl. But Gracie had always put her best interest at heart. Gracie was so much like Maribel. They had a lot in common and she found herself relating to her girlfriend a lot. But, Maribel loved that her and Lilliana were so different. She loved that, despite them being pretty much polar opposites, they clicked from the moment they met and it just seemed right. Maribel loved how Lilliana understood her like no one else could.
And after intense thinking, Maribel knew what she had to do. She had to talk to Gracie before she could even think about acting on anything. Maribel knew it was best to be upfront with her than hide things. So she set up a time to meet with her girlfriend at her favorite cafe later that day, the whole time butterflies were flying around in her stomach.
The minute she saw Maribel, Gracie knew that something was wrong. Maribel was twisting the rings on her fingers, she saw. Gracie knew that she only did that when she was nervous, so she was already having a bad feeling about this meetup. Her girlfriend had called to see her after a good two weeks of no contact, so there's only a few ways the conversation could go. Instead of dwelling too much on it, Gracie ordered her coffee and went to greet her girlfriend.
"Hey, beautiful," Gracie said in an excited tone, pressing a kiss to Maribel's forehead. "Long time no see."
As soon as Maribel saw her, she felt beyond guilty. She couldn't keep it in any longer. "Lilliana told me that she loved me."
It took a moment for Gracie to take that in. She blinked a couple times and cleared her throat. "Oh. When did this happen?"
"About two weeks ago," Maribel replied, not being able to look her girlfriend in the eye. "That's why I've kind of been ignoring you. I really needed some time to myself to think over some things."
Gracie's lips pulled into a pout. "Think about what? What exactly are you trying to tell me?"
Maribel was absolutely terrified about the words that might spill out of her mouth. "I... I don't know Gracie."
Gracie laughed bitterly. She always knew that Maribel had some type of feelings for Lilliana. They were such close friends and they seemed to complete each other, anyone could see that. The both of them don't say anything for awhile, trying to preserve the last bits of their relationship for as long as possible. They just sat there, with their cups of hot coffee warming up their cold hands as they both think about what to say next. Gracie decides to break the silence, even though she's scared to do so.
"So, what are you going to do, Maribel? Which path will you take?" She asked Maribel, trying not to sound condescending, but failing tremendously.
Maribel looked at anything besides Gracie's eyes, trying to calm her anxiety by memorizing the little moles on her hands, because, deep down, she already knew the answer. They both did. She didn't need to think about it one bit. "I'm so sorry," she croaks out in a quiet voice.
"Okay," Gracie said, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. She loved Maribel so much, but all she wanted was for her to be happy. And if that wasn't with her, she just had to be okay with it. Gracie gathered her courage and got up from the small table, sniffling the whole time as she tried her hardest not to cry. She placed a small, chaste kiss to Maribel's cheek before leaving the coffee shop.
Maribel felt completely broken but simultaneously happy. Her one good relationship had ended. Gracie was an amazing person. She always put Maribel before herself. Maribel had started to doubt her decision before she remembered the exact reason she chose to do so. Now, she could actually be with her soulmate.
