When
Robert finally got in the bus, everyone jumped from behind the seats clapping and yelling ‘surprise’, surprising Robert. With a smile, he went over to Alex and Liz and asked, “I thought the party was tomorrow?”
“Well it was our idea, we just had a little help”, replied Liz.
Robert kissed her on the cheek, patted his best friend on the shoulder and went to enjoy the party, promising the bus driver they would clean up later. The party didn’t end because at school people still congratulated him, randomly.
After school, they decided to walk home together, going first to Liz’s house, the Alex and leaving Robert behind.
When Robert opened his door, the house was completely dark. The only light was from the opened door and a candle someone held. Suddenly the lights were turned on and Robert’s parents appeared before him, with cake, singing happy birthday. The cake was chocolate and vanilla flavored with blue frosting.
“Happy Birthday, sweetheart”
“Thanks mom”, Robert said while opening his presents on the kitchen.
“There’s one more surprise”, said his dad once Robert opened the last present.
Curious, Robert asked, “What is it?”
“First put on this blind fold.”
“You’re going to have to trust us, okay?” his mom said as she put the blind fold on Robert.
That didn’t stop him from trying to guess at what it was though. Robert tried to get a hint all the way until they stopped and told him to take the blind fold off.
“Now I know you’ll have to wait a while to use it, but we knew we couldn’t hide it from you any longer. So I said, ‘hey let him enjoy it’”, said his father proudly. Claire, Robert’s mom, cleared her throat, “fine it was our idea”, David, his dad said in which Claire gave a satisfied nod.
Lost for words, he hugged his parents and made his way to his brand new red sports car. Robert, forgetting about his parents, went upstairs for his phone to tell his friends of the presents. When he came back, Robert heard his parents arguing in whispers, so he hid the same way he did last time this happened, something they were deciding on telling Robert.
“You said we would tell him everything, and now you say no?!?” his mother whispered.
“Yes”, his dad tried to answer calmly, which didn’t work.
“Why?”
“I just don’t know how he would react...”
“Trust me please, we’ll regret it if we don’t tell him sooner.”
“Ok, we’ll do it your way; for now.”
