Robert went back home with the intention of calling off the party, but everyone was already leaving. He noted to himself to clean the drink stains all over the house, especially the ones against the white walls. Robert was glad that his birthday was on Saturday this year. August 14, 2014, the day everything changed, at least he didn't have homework.
Seeing his parents, Robert decided that even though it wasn't the best moment to ask, but he had, no, needed to know, before he got more confused. Turning to his parents, he asked, "Am I adopted?"
Silence, the tension in the air was growing more and more by each second. Robert didn't regret asking, seeing as it was his right to know, but by the looks on their faces he knew it was true. Breaking the silence, Claire asked cautiously, "Why would you think that honey?"
"It's true isn't it? Why didn't you tell me!?! It would've been fine if you had told me earlier, but to find out on your birthday!?! Even my friends knew before me! They think I'm the kid from some prophesy, they showed me things that I thought were impossible, and apparently I can do the same things?!” he ran a hand through his hair, fixing his honey brown eyes on the floor, which became very interesting.
How could they not tell me!? Everyone knew but me, was this some joke to them? Like, did they decide, 'Hey let's not tell Robert the truth, he won't mind right?' Well I do mind, I DON'T like lies, I don't care what it is, I prefer that people tell me to my face instead of beating around the bush! I value honesty, that's why I'm so mad. I'm ok with the fact that I'm adopted, I even suspected it once, I just don't like being lied to, Robert thought to himself.
"Robert, calm down, we didn't tell you because we didn't want you to bear with the consequences!" Said David, his father, his green eyes pleading him drop the subject. Robert being the stubborn guy he is, ignored this.
"I know that I have to defeat my real father..."
"No sweetie, that's only part of the truth", his mother interrupted. "In order to defeat him, you must kill him and we didn't want you to live with the fact that you killed your own father..."
"He killed my mother!" Robert said frustrated," he had no right..."
"She let herself get killed to safe you!" She cut in, tears in her eyes. "She thought it would be easier for both of you if you didn't know so you didn't suffer! Leigh wanted you to have as much of a normal life as you could, she did what she thought was the best and look were it got her!!! She is dead! She asked me not to tell you before she left, and if you ever found out she wanted us to stop you from doing something stupid, to not rush in head first without knowing all the facts, without being prepared! What will you do when you find him? Do you even know where to start looking? Just calm down, take a deep breath and then, together, we'll figure out what to do. She knew this would happen, you got your stubbornness from her. What about us? Don't you think I want to go to Nicholas myself and kill him! She was my best friend for god's sake!" When she finished, Claire sat down, put her head between her knees and cried.
Stunned, he slowly went to hug his mother, showing her he cared, whispering a sorry. Claire buried her face in his shoulder, trying to calm herself down. Even though the sobs stopped, he didn't let her go. I guess the saying is true, Robert thought, actions speak louder than words.
"I think we are all pretty tired, so I think is best that we all get some sleep. Robert if you have any more questions we will discuss it on the morning." His father turned towards his wife, who had fallen asleep on their child's shoulder, picked her up bridal style and went up the stairs, Robert following behind. Before they parted ways, they exchanged goodnights and went to their rooms.
Not even bothering to change clothes, he instantly fell asleep once his face hit the pillow, glad tomorrow was Sunday.
Waking up from yet another strange dream, he picked up the phone. Robert felt he shouldn't remember this dream, but all he could remember where the people in the dream, Liz, Alex, James, the twins, Gabriela, His parents and dark figure. Looking at the screen, it was an unknown number, but he decided to answer anyways, you never know.
"Hey, who's this?" Robert asked tiredly.
"Is this Robert?” asked, surprisingly a girl.
“Yes, again who's this?"
"It's Gabriela."
"Oh! Hey what's up, it's...” he checked his alarm clock. "5 in the morning, you have a bad habit of waking me up early you know that?"
"Yeah, sorry about that but I need to talk to you can you meet me in front of Cathy's in 15 minutes?"
Robert asked curiously," Why should I?"
"Please?” she begged, her voice cracking at the end. It sounded like she had been crying.
"Ok, fine, I'll go but you own me one." He hung up before she could answer, glad that at least hadn't lied to him, yet. Robert didn't know her well, and she was new, there is also the fact that she was in his dream...
Shaking the thought out of his head, Robert dressed in comfortable clothes, and walked towards the coffee shop, since he still couldn't use his car. When he arrived, he saw Gabriela crying in a corner outside, but when he went over to console her, she quickly tried to recover herself when she saw him.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah I'm just a little upset with someone and you?" Gabriela asked sniffing.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, you have a weird look on your face", she came closer, inspecting his face. "I've never seen you like this", she commented.
"Well you haven't known me that long so how do you know?” when he saw the hurt in her eyes, Robert and shrugged, "I just learned that I've been lied to my whole live by the people I thought I knew."
"Can you talk about it?" Gabriela asked, touching his shoulder lightly.
He shook his head, "You wouldn't understand, I don't think you would believe me, plus I don't know where to start", he whispered that last part, shrugging of her hand and looking down.
"Sure”, he answered a bit more excited, "I suddenly have a craving for cookies and cream."
They sat next to the windows while waiting for their orders, Gabriela ordering hers with hazelnut syrup or chocolate, Robert doesn't remember since his mind was somewhere at the moment, not noticing their orders arrived.
"Now can you tell me what happened?" Gabriela asked taking a sip of her drink.
"I don't know..."
"You can trust me”, she said while placing a hand over Robert's from across the table. “Okay? I won't tell anyone I promise", she put her hand on her heart while she said that.
"How do I know you aren't lying?"
"You'll just have to take a leap of faith."
