Definition of ABC poemAn ABC poem has a series of lines that create a mood, picture, or feeling. Lines are made up of words and phrases. The first word of line 1 begins with an A, the first word of line 2 begins with a B etc.
An ABC poem is a very basic poem. In its simplest form, it is a poem that the first word of the first line begins with A and each subsequent line after continues the alphabet. So, first line A, second line B, third line C, etc, through the end of the alphabet. Such as this example:After the sun goes down
Blackness fills the woods
Calmness settles in
Dogwood trees rustle
However, you can take this poem to new heights by having each word of the poem be in the sequential order of the alphabet, such as:
Apples, bright, crunchy
Dandy, edible, fun
Other ABC poems only have 5 or 6 lines using sequential letters:
Let me tell you this
Monday is my favorite day
Not many people agree
Often they gripe and grumble
Putting Monday down
An ABC poem may look simple but it can be quite a challenge! Here is a full example of an ABC poem:
A B C's of Fairies
By MystresMynaAfter the sun goes down
Blackness fills the woods
Calmness settles in
Dogwood trees rustle
Everything is fine
Faces peer through the
Gnarled branches and vines
Hardly a sound is made
In this little fairy town
Just the soft flutter
Keeping perfect rhythm is
Little fairy wings
Moon light wafting
Notice how it glistens
Off the small frog pond
Pretty little fairies
Quietly go about the night
Rummaging through the fallen leaves
Searching for hidden enchanted
Treasures left in the daylight
Under leaves and twigs
Various things are found
What a lovely evening
Xenolithic rocks are always a favorite find
Yes, this all sounds a little strange
Zany things often happen when the sun goes down. Now it is your turn to write a ABC poem! Have fun with it, think of crazy combinations and make it your own!
