Life among the tombstones

I walk among the tombstones

remembering the living

now at rest

now stilled and mute

I walk the ancient battlefields

remembering the warriors

spears laid by

now still and silent

for only here

and too there

has Death no sway

For all around in all the world

I ache amid the frenzied joy and tears

at war with Death

its rusting and reduction

But a short time

might I hold Death at bay

I walk among the tombstones

I walk with long dead champions

for only the dead

done with smiling and dispute...

I rest in the stillness
