Hello and Welcome!! I am so happy you are here!! This month we will be taking a look at the BLITZ poem. It is a relatively new style of poetry invented in 2008 by Robert Keim. In doing some research for this article I was unable to find any information about Mr. Keim or how he came up with this unique style of poetry.
A BLITZ has a very specific form and reading over the rules, it can look a bit intimidating or complicated, but I found if you just take it one step at a time it is really quite simple. The BLITZ is a poem that is meant to be read very quickly, without hesitation for any punctuation, therefore it has none; it also has no stanzas. The only reason to pause reading a BLITZ poem is to breath.
I find this style of poetry very exciting, because it is like going down a walking (or running) trail that you have never been down before, and you have no idea what you are going to see next. The poems that come from this style seem to have a mind of their own and have the ability to take you on a journey you had never intended to take.
Here are the rules:
Line 1 should be one short phrase or image:High sky
Line 2 should be another short phrase or image using the same first word as the first word in Line 1:
High sky
High water
Lines 3 and 4 should be short phrases or images using the last word of Line 2 as their first words:
High sky
High water
Water fall
Water deep
Lines 5 and 6 should be short phrases or images using the last word of Line 4 as their first words, and so on until you've made it through 48 lines.
Line 49 should be the last word of Line 48
Line 50 should be the last word of Line 47
The title of the poem should be three words long and follow this format:
first word of Line 3 (preposition or conjunction) first word of line 47
There should be no punctuation
