"Aw drats." Katherine huffed looking at the school bus that was now driving away. "Who even says 'drats' nowadays?" Jack mused. Katherine rolled her eyes "We're gonna be late for school, Jack!" Jack scoffed "Oh c'mon Kathy, I'm sure plenty a people are gonna be late today. I mean, look at how much snow there is!" He said gesturing wildly, and somewhat sarcastically, to the few inches of snow on the grass.
"It's wintertime in New York City, what do you expect?" Katherine retorted. Before Jack could say anything Katherine continued, "We should start walking." Jack looked at her incredulously "Walking? But it's freezing!" Katherine had already started walking and called over her shoulder "Hurry up, Cowboy!"
Jack playfully glared at her as he caught up, "I told you not to call me Cowboy." Katherine stopped to consider this, shifting her backpack to be more comfortable. "Alright... Cowboy." Jack narrowed his eyes and without warning started chasing her down the sidewalk. They had accidentally run into, quite literally, several people, which made Jack and laugh and Katherine call out an apology. Both the sophomores forgot just for a moment or two, about school.
They both finally slowed down as Katherine checked her watch. "We have ten minutes, Jack come on!"
Jack sighed "Well if you insist, I know a shortcut." Katherine nodded as she followed Jack through a park. They were both quiet for awhile as they walked and Katherine realized it was in fact and shortcut and quickened her pace. "I think we might actually make it on time, surprisingly." She remarked. There was no response and as she was turning around to see if Jack was still there, a snowball was thrown at her shoulder. Jack started laughing, which was definitely a mistake. In seconds a snowball was flung at the side of his head. "Whoops," Katherine said innocently.
An all out snowball war began and Katherine was met with a face full of snow. "Whoops," Jack said mockingly. "Oh now you're gonna get it!" Katherine said and proceeded to tackle him down on to the snow covered grass.
When Katherine tackled Jack she did not expect him to drag her down with him. They were both on the ground cheeks flushed from the cold and snow coating them. Katherine was struggling to get up as Jack kept a hand on her wrist. "Let me go, Cowboy!" She laughed throwing snow at him with her free hand, not even bothering to make it into a snowball. Jack smirked and threw snow back, "Never!"
At this moment Katherine knew her cheeks weren't just flushed from the cold and the snow. Yet here they were sitting, facing each other, and Jack now had both of Katherine's wrists seized.
She struggled again, attempting to throw some more snow at him but he wasn't budging. "This is so not fair," Katherine said crossly. "Seems pretty fair to me," Jack grinned. Katherine looked up at Jack and narrowed her eyes as he stuck out his tongue. Katherine was so intent on glaring at him, she didn't realize the space between their faces was getting smaller and smaller.
Faces only a few inches apart, they were both blushing wildly. Jack looked at her for a few seconds before cupping a hand on one side of her face and hugging her waist with the other, and kissed her. Katherine knew she should've pulled away, but at this point she didn't care. Her fingers ended up in Jack's hair as his hat fell carelessly to the ground. The noise of people on the streets, and cars on the road seemed to have been muted. Sure she'd kissed boys before, but it was never as intimate as this. It was never as blissful as this.
When they pulled away Jack grabbed his hat and immediately looked down. "I'm so sorry Kathy I didn't mean to kiss you. I just got so caught up and it's fine if you hate me and-" He was silenced, and surprised by Katherine kissing him. It was significantly shorter than the last one, however it held just as much meaning. "Shut up Cowboy," Katherine grinned, blushing slightly at the impulsive kiss.
"So I'm guessing you don't hate me then?" Jack asked nervously. "No I hate you so much, that's obviously why I kissed you back, you nitwit." Katherine said sarcastically. Jack laughed "So what does this make us then?" Katherine pondered this for a bit, "Well, I'll call you boyfriend if you call me girlfriend."
"Deal," Jack smiled. A genuine smile that made Katherine smile too. "So, are you still freezing like you claimed to be?" She teased, lacing her gloved fingers through his. "Yes," he said stubbornly but noticing Katherine's eye roll added "but that's okay." People passing by hadn't the slightest clue why two high schoolers were sitting on the snow covered ground holding hands, but they didn't care.
They both got up to brush off their snow covered clothing. Katherine didn't notice the snow in her hair until Jack pointed it out, laughing slightly.
"Hey Katherine?"
"Yeah, Jack?"
"We're late for school," he grinned.
(A/n- Are you cringing at this? Cause I'm cringing. Maybe it's cause it's my first time writing fanfiction, and I'm kinda really self conscious. Bleh, I dunno know.)
