Spot and Race had known each other since high school. They had been there for each other through thick and thin, and we're practically inseparable. So when Spot decided to get an apartment, it was no surprise to anyone that Race ended up being his roommate.
It was a lazy Tuesday night,
and Race had just gotten back from a long day of classes at the nearby college he went to. He unlocked the door to see Spot already sitting on the couch watching tv. "Hey Racer," he said without even glancing up at him, causing Race to scoff. "What a warm welcome," he said dropping his book bag by the door."Whatcha watching?" Race asked plopping down on the small couch. "A show," he said ruffling Race's hair, causing Race to swat his hands away. "I told you to stop doin' that!" He said indignantly. "It's not like you're doing anything to stop me," Spot challenged. Race rolled his eyes and took out a cigar from his pocket, starting to chew on it slightly.
Spot quickly grabbed it making a tsk tsk sound. "Hey that's my cigar!" Race cried out. "And I've told ya several times, it ain't healthy for you." Spot retorted. Race snatched it back, sticking out his tongue while doing so. "It's not that easy to just go cold turkey on somethin' like that, Conlon." Spot sighed turning his attention back to the tv "Yeah yeah, I know."
Race slumped back against the couch letting out a quiet sigh in the process. Spot raised an eyebrow "Something wrong?" Race opened his mouth to answer but was cut off. The tv had turned off, so had all the lights. The only light that shone in the room was the faint moon streaming through the window. They both stood up to look out the window, and saw that most of the city had lost power. "What the hell?" Spot said, while Race shrugged. "I bet ya ten bucks I can find a flashlight in under five minutes." Spot laughed "And I bet you'll smack right into a wall."
But Race who was already making his way down the hall, shouted back "No I won't!" So Spot sat on the couch waiting for Race to come back and wishing he hadn't left his phone in the bedroom. After a few minutes he heard a loud thump and couldn't help but burst out laughing. "Did you find the flashlight yet?" He called out. There was no answer. "Race?" He tried again. He got up trying not to bump into any pieces of furniture or walls. He walked down the same hallway Race did when he felt something grab his back, making him jump what felt like a foot in the air. Hearing Race's laughter he wanted to slap him "That was not funny!"
"Then why am I laughing?" Race remarked turning on the flashlight and pointing it at the wall. "At least you found it," he mumbled still cross that Race scared him. "Oh c'mon don't be like that, Spotty!" Race said punching his shoulder lightly, cigar still hanging out of his mouth. Spot shook his head "You know I can't stay mad at you for too long." Race grinned "Yeah I know." They walked back to the living room when suddenly Race's face lit up like a Christmas tree. "Let's go look at the stars!"
Spot gave Race a quizzical glance "Why would we do that exactly?" Race pondered this for a moment, "Well for one, we having nothing better to do. And two haven't you ever seen how pretty stars are?" Spot shrugged "Not really, I mean we do live in New York, when would we ever see stars? Plus what's so pretty about stars, they's is just stars." Race set the flashlight down on the couch and opened the window, which had a pretty accessible fire escape right there.
They both got out to feel a cool breeze and hear shouts of people far below. No doubt about it, people were panicking because of the blackout. Race leaned against the railing and gestured to the sky. What seemed like millions of stars dotted the sky and Spot stated in awe. It wasn't everyday you could see something like this. Spot walked up to where Race was standing. "Pretty ain't it?" Spot nodded "Yeah," but he wasn't just thinking about the sky.
"So what was wrong earlier?" Spot asked and Race shook his head dismissively, "It was nothing." Spot wasn't buying into it as he had known Race for years. "Yeah right, what's bothering you?" Race gave him a sideway glance and finally gave in. "Promise you won't hate me if I tell you?" Spot looked at him appalled, "Why would I ever hate you?"
Race took a deep breath "Cause I like you, like more than a friend. And now everything is gonna be ten times more awkward so let's just forget I ever said anything." He shoved his hands in his pockets and stared intently at the sky. "Racer," he said softly causing Race to look at him. "I think I might like you too."
Race's cheeks turned pink and his cigar almost fell out of his mouth.
"Do you really mean it?" Spot looked into his bright blue eyes and saw very faintly, the reflection of stars in the night sky. He slid his hand into Race's, both of their cheeks fairly red now."Yeah, I mean it."
