Miles sat not being able to talk to anyone. Both Brooke and Jax had fallen asleep after pre meds. Nurses kept coming in and out, checking on patients and talking to each other.
Miles studied Jax's face. The corners of his mouth turned up at every sound made. His eyebrows raised and lowered. Miles liked to believe that Jax was dreaming about something that made him happy, like music or puppies or god knows what.
"You like him, don't you?" A familiar voice broke his train of thought. He turned around to see Brooke stretching her legs out. "It's pretty obvious." Miles sat there awkwardly. He could decide whether or not to tell her.
Miles shook his head. "What does it matter if I do or not," Miles asked, slightly annoyed. Brooke was taken aback by his tone. "Sorry. Just a little on edge."
Brooke nodded her head. "I get it. Your best friend/crush gets diagnosed with cancer, only 6 months after you get a kidney transplant. Wow." Brooke placed her hand on his shoulder.
Miles sat there, udderly confused. "How did you know about that," Miles questioned.
Brooke laughed. "I guess I just know everything." Miles raised an eyebrow. "Just kidding my mom used to be a nurse at the hospital. I recognized the name from your chart." Miles sat there for a minute but eventually brushed it off.
After another hour, Jax started walking up. Miles heard the creak of the chair and turned to Jax. "Hey man," Jax said through a yawn. "How long was I out," he asked.
Miles sat back and stared at the ceiling thoughtfully. Jax raised an eyebrow at him, which made Miles chuckle. "About an hour and a half," Miles responded. Jax looked and the chemo bag. Miles noticed him staring at it. "Don't get so freaked out about it. Knowing you, you're gonna have a panic attack over it and give up. And you can't give up. I need you. You're not just my best friend, you're all I have left. So please, keep fighting for me. Please."
Jax turned back to Miles to see tears running down his face. He wiped them away when he saw Jax staring. "I'm not going to give up. I'm going to keep fighting. I have to," Jax starts to tear up, "I'm not ready to go man," his words ended with a lip quiver. Miles pulled Jax into a hug.
Brooke stood up and pulled her IV pole over to pull them all into a group hug. "I know I just met you guys but this felt appropriate." Everyone started laughing. Brooke whispered in Miles' ear, "tell him about the thing Miles."
The group broke apart the hug. The nurse came over and disconnected Jax's IV. "You can go to the sign-out window to schedule your next appointment. They will probably be once a week." Jax nodded his head and stood up.
Brooke sat back down in her chair. "See you guys on Monday," Brooke declared. Jax smiled and waved, while walking towards the door.
