She looked so peaceful sleeping there, wrapped in the quilted blanket his mother had made. The heat was killing him though, surging through his veins like fire, he hated the city for this reason exactly. Heat waves were common, scorching up any water that could potentially save someone’s life. Anger curled his hand into a fist and sending it flying into the dummy Xavier had set up in the corner of the room.
For a moment her breath caught and as he watched her curl into a ball she began shaking, before he could make it to her side Tallen let out an earth shattering scream. Grabbing her fists he looked worriedly down on her pained face.
“Xavier!” he barked only to remember that his brother had gone out on patrol to find food. Growling to himself Noah slid in bed next to the still shaking Tallen. “Hey, shh it’s going to be alright.”
Bringing her back up against his chest he locked her still thrashing arms in an iron grip. Humming in hope that she would calm down he barely realized that their bodies were flush up against one another. After several more good attempts at breaking free Tallens body began to relax, her breathing calmed and Noah absently brushed his lips against her bare shoulder in his own attempt to calm his heart rate. Letting himself close his eyes listening to her heartbeat, her hair had the faintest trace of strawberry. He wished the night had lasted longer, anger surged through him at the thought of how Jamie had stolen her from him. Not realizing that he was squeezing her into his chest until Tallen coughed he instantly let go of her arms.
“Noah?” her voice cracked and had to stop himself from cradling her, she had cried herself to sleep.
“I’m sorry I woke you, you looked like you were having a bad dream.” He whispered not daring, not wanting, to scoot even an inch away from her comforting body.
“Do-Do you have water?” her voice rasped sandpaper as she looked at him with those emerald orbs. Noah mentally groaned, did she even know what he would do to get water? Did she even know what he would do for her at all?
Shaking his head he rolled onto his back, narrowly avoiding rolling off the bed and huffing in frustration.
“Why is it so hot?” Tallen forced herself to talk ignoring the scratching feeling in her throat.
“shh, we’ll l get water as soon I promise.” Noah whispered closing his eyes wishing the dry crispy air would offer the mercy of a breeze. Lapsing into silence he zoned into her uneven breathing and wondered what she had been dreaming about before. “Tal?”
“What?” his heart constricted at how frail she sounded, looking sideways his breath caught at how close she had shifted.
“What were you dreaming about?” it was her turn to stop breathing, how would he react?
“Just a nightmare,” she replied rolling so that she was looking up at the ceiling. How heartless was she? She loved Jamie, didn’t she? At least that’s what she thought. Trying to ignore how much she her body longed to curl against his, like it had been when she was awoken, she just swallowed her spit before sitting up. “I better get going.”
