I sat upright in bed, blinking to wake myself up. Sunlight was coming through the window, and the room was well-lit. I looked around, then realized where I was.
"Seriously, I wasn't just dreaming?" I blinked, My eyes wandered across Mika's room.
Mika was sitting on her bed, watching me. Her staff was floating a few feet in front of her. She was wearing her performers outfit, the one she usually wore onstage. Her eyes were bright and awake, and she seemed to be enjoying herself.
I put a hand to my forehead, "What time...?"
"Still early morning. You don't sleep much, do you?" She folded her arms, "You were up until late last night, tossing and turning."
"How can you accuse me of not sleeping enough, when you were obviously awake at the same time?" I complained.
She rolled her eyes, "Go take a bath, you need one every morning."
"Yeah, you told me last night." I sighed, standing up. I looked back down at the hay I had been resting on, and saw hundreds of tiny ice crystals where I had been laying. All at once, they melted.
"Your magic is still too out of control." She frowned, "Hopefully the formula in the bathwater will kick in soon..."
"Aw, are you worried about me?" I glanced at her, "You actually were really nice to me last night, you know. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe we'll start to get along?"
She glared at me, "Sit down."
"But I thought you wanted me to go to the bath?" I complained, remaining standing. As soon as I said that, something strange happened. The cuff on my wrist seemed to tighten, digging hard into my skin. I looked down at it in shock, and saw drops of blood begin to make their way out of the cuts the cuff was creating. I fell back on my bed, and immediately the cuff stopped squeezing, and released its grip. Blood trickled down my arm.
"I...think you've proven your point." I winced, "Great, now there's blood all over me."
"Now go take a bath, and make sure you clean yourself up. I'll have a boggart leave bandages in front of the bathroom." She folded her arms, her eyes seemed more devilish then before. "Do remember, Akaya - I am in complete control of you. That cuff-" She pointed to the cuff on my wrist, "Ensures you follow my every command."
Then little details started to pop into my head. The Spirit book had been wearing thick leather straps to keep him shut. Mia had snapped them in half, but...
"So The Spirit Book...those thick leather straps, are those like this cuff?" I looked at my wrist.
Mika nodded, "Soro tightens them when the Spirit Book misbehaves. Most familiars, Akaya, are far from good. For example, Mavet's familiar is a zombie. Vida's is a wisp - a soul trapped in a glowing orb. The Spirit Book is a lesser monster."
"And then there's me." I realized, "A human..."
She frowned, "It's rare, but it's happened before. But yes, it doesn't quite fit. Most familiars are demonic or spiritual entities forced into a binding oath. But don't think that the familiars like you simply because they obey. Most of the time, familiars would love to betray their masters to retrieve their freedom."
