Mika and I stood in the alley, looking up at the night sky.
“How much longer until our ride gets here?” I asked.
“Any minute now.” She replied.
“He’s certainly taking his time.” I yawned, stretching.
Dreamcatcher darted around my head, like he was bored. I glanced at Mika, she kept her eyes on the sky. “You know, people live up there. On the moons.”
“I read about it on the network.” My eyes went to her, “Glass domes, right?”
Mika nodded. “I wonder what’s going to happen to them when the fighting starts.”
I hadn’t thought about that. There were other people, all over the universe on hundreds of different planets. Many of them probably traded with Metropolis II. How would they be affected by the upcoming conflict? And then there was something else. Something I felt like I was missing.
Frost started coating the ground around us.
“You need to stop doing that.” Mika sighed, “Eventually, people are going to notice.”
“I haven’t done it for a while.” I complained.
“Whenever you get worried your body temperature starts decreasing. Your eyes start becoming a sharper blue. When we left the mansion this morning, you were leaving a path of frost behind you as we walked.” She glanced at me. “You’ve been letting out a continuous flow of magic ever since the incident with Kraven.”
“I didn’t even notice.” I blinked.
“I did the same thing when I first started practicing magic.” She shrugged.
A few moments later, the car that had driven us into the city pulled up in front of the ally. Mika looked back at me and smiled, “We better hurry before a crowd starts gathering.”
“I am right behind you.” I replied.
The two of us entered the vehicle.
“Do you think the others are back from what they were doing yet?”
“I don’t know. If not, then it will be just us.” She looked at my Dramyling, which had begun to sneak towards the chocolate bowl in front of us. “We should prepare for tonight. It shouldn’t be anything as dangerous as yesterday, but you can never be too careful.”
“You say that a lot.” I looked out the window. The city lights had turned on, and everything was just as alive as it had been during the day. There were people milling about, light displays, hundreds of lit-up signs and more garris then I could count.
“The city never sleeps.” Mika said, as if reading my mind.
I looked down at my paralyzed arm. “Sounds about right.”
The ride back to the mansion was quick and uneventful. Mika and I wandered from topic to topic as we waited. Dreamcatcher was nibbling on chocolate. It seemed almost…peaceful. Eventually the hovercar stopped in front of the mansion. I helped Mika out again, and we waved at the driver as he left.
