It didn’t take us long to find our friends. We found Kennedy hiding behind an overturned vehicle, reloading her pistols. She was bleeding from multiple cuts and was covered in bruises. She still wore her café outfit.
“Whoa, what happened to you?” JJ asked, frowning down at the girl.
She ignored him and looked at Zach. “You were right, there’s more of them.”
“More of them?” I asked, frowning at Zach. “What do you mean?”
“Lightblade was worried that the blink ghost was just part of a large scale attack.” Zach looked back at Kennedy. “What else is there?”
“Besides the Blink ghost? A female demon, a strange black skeleton, several lesser demons. I saw a spider with a Scorpion’s tale pass by earlier, but it ignored me.”
“It’s dead.” Zach replied, “Two grenades under its belly.”
She regarded us with respect. “Just you three?”
“Just us.” He reaffirmed.
“For some reason that doesn’t surprise me.” She replied, standing up.
An explosion split through the night. Mika’s voice cried out, and I heard Chynna scream. The four of us exchanged glances, and set out in the direction of the sound. We turned several street corners. I was shocked to find no one wandering the roads, save a few men with cameras and a chopper flying overhead.
The city was a wreck. The only street that seemed intact was the street with the arcade on it, and the stadium area.
“Mika and Chynna are drawing them away from the key landmarks.” Kennedy explained, checking her weapons once again. “Everything was going fine until the female demon appeared. Akaya, JJ, she mentioned your names in specific. Apparently she was sent out to hunt you down.”
“Hunt us?” My head throbbed. What had we done that was so dangerous? Fighting off one of Kraven’s puppets and barely surviving didn’t seem to make us worth the effort. And killing the scorpion had been hard, but something made it feel like I’d done something similar to it before.
“Hunt you, kill you, you get the point.” She stopped. “Look!”
In front of us, Mika and Chynna were fighting the blink ghost. Mika had a red aura around her, flames were firing from her staff. The blink ghost darted out of the way and launched itself at Chynna, disappearing for a split second before reappearing behind the monk. Chynna reacted quickly, whipping around and striking with her short sword. The blink ghost flickered and vanished, reappearing to the left of Chynna. The ghost’s nails grew into blades and she stabbed forwards. Chynna somehow caught the attack on her shield, and dashed away from the ghost.
That was when Mika attacked from behind, staff whirling. She swung her staff at the blink ghosts head, but the ghost reacted with superhuman speed. She caught the staff on one of her blades and kicked Mika away, disappearing again.
Kennedy ran forwards, “Come on you three, we need to help them! Stay away from those burning vehicles, we don’t know whether or not they’ll explode.”
