YOU’RE FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS AND THE BOYS FIND OUT
Calum: “Y/n!” a chorus of voices cheer when you enter the backstage area of 5 Seconds of Summer’s concert. “Hi guys,” you return, glad to be visiting your four friends on their big European tour. “I’ve missed you so much,” you say to the lot of them, although your eyes meet Calum’s, giving him a special message. You’ve missed him the most. “I’ll show you around the backstage,” Calum offers immediately. “There’s not much to see,” Ashton says, scrunching his eyebrows in confusion. “No, I’d love to see it,” you insist, trying not to seem too eager. The confused looks from Michael, Ashton and Luke tell you that you haven’t been too successful. “Come on then,” Calum adds quickly before leading you out of the room and through an empty hallway. “In here,” Calum whispers, pulling you into his dressing room. Before the door is even shut his lips are on yours. He mutters something about missing you as he pushes you against the wall. Suddenly the door is swung open and Calum jumps away from you. “I knew it!” Michael shouts in triumph as Luke and Ashton stand with open mouths and wide eyes behind him. “It’s not what it looks like,” Calum begins instantly. “Friends with benefits? Yeah it is,” Michael infers. “Okay, yeah,” Calum mumbles, looking to you for help. You look away, not wanting to meet any of the boys’ judgmental stares. “Calum, can we talk to you alone?” Ashton asks quietly. “No,” Calum says flatly. He frowns at his reproving friends, but none of them bend. Instead they turn to you, clearly waiting for you to leave. “Okay, bye,” you mumble, brushing past the boys and out of the room. You’re barely through the doorway when the door is shut and locked by Ashton. “What are you thinking?” you hear Ashton ask angrily. “What’s the problem?” Calum asks defensively. “You know these things always end badly,” Ashton sighs, “And you’re gonna ruin your friendship with Y/n - probably all of our friendships with Y/n.” “That’s stupid,” Calum rejects. You hear shuffling and then from Luke, “Calum, wait!” You back away from the door just as Calum storms out. Calum pushes past you without a word as his friends rush out, meeting you in the hallway.
Luke: “What’s going on with you and Y/n?” Ashton asks Luke as the two of them, Calum, and Michael hang out at Calum’s place. “What do you mean what’s going on?” Luke asks evasively. “I mean what’s going on?” Ashton repeats. “Nothing,” Luke lies, his reddening cheeks giving him away. “You guys have seemed pretty close,” Michael realizes, “Does she finally like you back?” “No, uh, we aren’t close,” Luke stutters. “You were at her house like yesterday,” Calum points out. “Ooh really?” Ashton asks with excitement, “Are you two a thing now?” “No, she doesn’t like me like that,” Luke explains simply. “Then what were you doing at her house?” Calum persists. “We - we hook up sometimes,” Luke mumbles, his face a deeper shade of red. “You what?” Michael asks, positive he misheard. “We’re, what’s the term she used, friends with benefits,” Luke explains shyly. “Oh, Luke,” Calum sighs, shaking his head. “What?” Luke asks defensively. “Luke you like her!” Michael groans. “So?” Luke asks, not seeing the point. “You can’t be friends with benefits with a girl you like as more than friends!” Michael explains in frustration. “Sure I can,” Luke says with a shrug, “I just have to pretend I don’t like her.” “That’s not how it works,” Calum argues, “Because you’ll fall for her more and more and you’ll forget that she only sees you as a friend.” “That’s ridiculous,” Luke says, rolling his eyes, “I’m perfectly fine with just sex with the girl I like. It’s like a relationship but without all the messy, emotional crap.” “But you like all the messy, emotional crap!” Ashton protests, worried about his friend. “It just makes life complicated,” Luke says with a shrug. “Is that something Y/n tells you?” Michael asks, already knowing the answer. “Well, yeah but -” “Luke, you’re gonna get hurt,” Ashton sighs, “And I don’t wanna see that.” “I’m not a baby, guys!” Luke protests, getting angry, “I can handle myself and I don’t need your permission to have sex!” With that he storms out, leaving the boys to wonder how to deal with Luke’s imminent heartbreak.
Ashton: The chime of Ashton’s phone goes off once, twice, three times, attracting the attention of the four boys in Luke’s living room. “Who is that?” Ashton asks, his concentration on the video game he is playing with Calum. “Y/n texted you three times,” Luke informs him as he picks up Ashton’s phone and unlocks it. “Crap, don’t read that,” Ashton responds in a panic, dropping his remote to reach for the phone. “What the heck, Ashton?” Luke asks, looking up from Ashotn’s phone. “What is it?” Calum joins in, pausing the video game and turning his attention to the more interesting form of entertainment. “It’s nothing,” Ashton answers, snatching the phone from Luke and reading the incriminating texts. “Crap,” he says again as he reads the three messages. 'Come over tonight?' 'It's your turn to pick the music ;)' 'And I got new lingerie yesterday since you ripped the others..' Luke recites the messages he had just read for Michael and Calum. “You and Y/n?” Calum wonders in shock. “It’s nothing,” Ashton assures them. The incredulous looks from his friends tell him that they require further explanation. “It’s just - it’s just sex,” Ashton explains, hoping they’ll drop it. “You are so stupid,” Michael says, shaking his head in awe. “No I’m not!” Ashton protests, “We’re friends with benefits. It’s a normal thing!” “One of you is gonna end up falling for the other,” Calum sighs, shaking his head at Ashton. “No we aren’t,” Ashton assures him, “It’s totally casual and that’s how we both want it.” “Calum’s right,” Luke agrees, “One of you is gonna get hurt and then you won’t be friends anymore.” “You guys don’t know anything about us,” Ashton insists, getting to his feet in indignation. “Where are you going?” Michael calls as Ashton storms out. “To Y/n’s!” Ashton answers before slamming Luke’s door.
Michael: Where did you go last night?” Calum asks as him, Michael, Luke and Ashton eat their hotel breakfast. “Y/n’s room,” Michael answers nonchalantly as he prepares his pancakes. “For what?” Calum inquires. “Is this 20 questions?” Michael fires back. avoiding the question. “I was just wondering what you would’ve done in Y/n’s room in the middle of the night,” Calum mumbles. “What do you think?” Michael asks with a laugh. “Well normally I would think you’d be having sex,” Calum answers, “but you wouldn’t do that to her so -” “Why wouldn’t I do that to her?” Michael interrupts in confusion. “Because she obviously likes you,” Calum returns. Michael’s eyes narrow as he considers the prospect. “No she doesn’t,” he answers with confidence. “Um, yes she does,” Calum argues, surprised that Michael didn’t see it himself. “Guys?” Michael asks, turning to Luke and Ashton. “Yeah, she likes you,” Ashton agrees. “We’re just friends,” Michael persists. “Maybe to you,” Luke reasons, “but it’s pretty obvious she likes you.” “Crap,” Michael mutters to himself. “What?” Calum asks, noticing Michael’s panic. “I, uh, we hooked up last night,” Michael mumbles, “And a few nights before that and a few other times before.” “Are you serious?” Ashton asks in disbelief. “It was just casual!” Michael insists, “I didn’t know she had feelings for me!” “Did she know it was casual?” Calum asks with concern. “I don’t know,” Michael groans, realizing he’s probably ruined his friendship with you beyond repair. “You’re gonna need to figure that out,” Calum directs seriously. “How do I go about that?” Michael asks in distress, “Hey you know all those times we hooked up? You know that despite that I still have no feelings for you whatsoever, right? I don’t think that’ll go over too well.” “Well, you’ll have to figure out something,” Calum sighs, “Because you can’t keep leading her on.”
