ZARA'S POV

"Rotimi. What is my dad talking about?" I say.

Rotimi is just looking at me like a deer caught in headlights.

"I believe my daughter asked you a question." Dad says, placing his hands in his front pockets.

"Thanks Daddy. But I've got this." I smile.

Dad gives Rotimi the evil eye before walking away into the kitchen.

"So, are you going to answer me or..." I stare at him.

"Look, can we go somewhere to talk... somewhere more private."

Part of me wants to just kick him out but at the same time, I want an explanation. I deserve an explanation!

"Fine. We can go upstairs."

We both go upstairs and Rotimi follows me into one of the guests rooms.

He sits on one side of the bed and I sit down on the other

He sits on one side of the bed and I sit down on the other.

"Okay. Explain."

"Zara. I never meant to lie to you..." He begins.

I look at Rotimi and it looks like he's trying to get his thoughts together.

"...I've been singing since I could talk. Everyone always told me I should get into a studio and record and make my dreams a reality but studio time costed money I didn't have at the time so..."

"So what?" I say with an attitude.

"So, I had to do what I needed to do in order to be where I am right now."

"You couldn't get a regular job?" I ask.

"I had one! But it wasn't enough. Then one day a friend of my mine introduced me to your dad and the rest is history." Rotimi shrugs.

I take a deep breath before speaking.

"So, what did my dad mean by you still working for him?"

"While I was dealing, I told myself I would stop as soon as I got a record deal, and I did. I stopped. That whole situation with Mac was just me helping out a friend. I didn't want to do it but I couldn't leave him hanging."

Rotimi reaches his hand across the bed to grab mine but I move it before he can touch me.

"I also helped your dad with a few things before his release but that's it. I swear. And like I told Mac and your dad... this is the last time I help them with anything like this. I can't risk my career over some bullshit."
