ZARA'S POV
Dinner is awkward. I didn't expect it to be any other way but I thought that at least SOMEBODY would say something. The only thing I can hear is the noise from everyone chewing which is lowkey irritating my soul so I need to say something. Anything!
"So, how was everyone's day?" I ask.
Everyone looks at me as if I'm crazy.
"Well my day was interesting." I say.
"We know..." Dad says as he looks at me, Giovanni and Marcelle.
Rosa looks up at me. She looks as if she's trying to think of something to say so that it isn't awkwardly silent again.
"So...uhm... where are you two planning on staying while you're here in the states?" She asks.
It's actually a good question. A question that even I wanted the answer to but was too afraid to ask.
"You can stay here. There's plenty of room." Mom suggests.
"Ella..." Dad's eyes get big.
"No. It's okay. We'll probably just get rooms at a hotel for now." Giovanni says.
"Nonsense. If you want to get a hotel tomorrow then fine but it's getting late. You're staying here tonight and that's final." Mom smiles.
Rosa and I look up at dad and he's trying to hide his anger. Before he can respond, the doorbell rings.
"Who could that be?" Rosa says.
"Oh, shoot. I forgot I invited the boys over for dinner."
"The boys?" I say.
Mom rushes over to the front door but at the same time she looks as if she doesn't want to open the door at all.
When she comes back into the kitchen, there are two people standing behind her:
"Jeremy! Brandon!" I say.
Rosa and I rush over to hug them. Dad gets up and hugs them too.
"Brandon, you cut and dyed your hair?!" Rosa asked.
"Yeah.. wanted something different." He replies.
"Looks good." I say.
Brandon and Jeremy look at Giovanni and Marcelle.
"Sorry.. I hope we're not interrupting anything." Jeremy says.
"No, no. Not at all." Mom says.
Giovanni and Marcelle stand up and walk over to introduce themselves.
"So who are these two young men?" Marcelle smiles.
My dad chuckles under his breath.
"What? You don't recognize them?" Dad says.
Giovanni and Marcelle look at each other, confused. Dad walks over and stands behind Jeremy and Brandon.
"Why would I recognize them?" Marcelle says.
"Because... Brandon and Jeremy are your sons." Dad smirked, shaking his head.
We are all so shocked at what my dad just said that nothing but silence fills the room. It's so quiet that we could probably hear a pin drop in the house next door.
