ZARA'S POV
Rosa and I left the bank without her mom seeing us. We're on our way home. We're still trying to figure out when we should tell our family that Karmen is a detective.
"Dad is going to flip the fuck out!" Rosa panics.
"Right! I don't understand how we didn't know..." I say.
"I mean it's not our fault. We thought she was a drug addict. She really played the hell out of that role... she definitely missed her calling. Instead of a detective, she needs to be an actress." Rosa says.
Before I can say anything, my phone rings.
"Can you answer that for me?" I ask.
Rosa grabs my phone from my purse and answers, putting the phone on speaker.
"Zara's phone. Rosa speaking."
"Hey, Rosa. It's Marcelle. You and Zara need to get to your parents home ASAP." Marcelle says.
"Is something wrong?" I talk loud so he can hear me.
"Not sure. Rotimi and his friend Gavin are here..." Marcelle begins.
"Why is Gavin there?" Rosa and I say together.
"He'll explain. Just get here now." Marcelle says right before he hangs up the phone.
Rosa puts my phone down and looks at me.
"What do you think is going on?" Rosa asks.
"I have no idea. But I guess we're about to find out.."
I push my foot down on the gas. I'm going 20 miles over the speed limit, racing to get to our parents house.
* * *
Walking inside the house, everyone is sitting around the room. It almost looks like an intervention. Our parents are here, our granddad and uncle, Rotimi and Gavin... even our cousins Jeremy and Brandon are here. It must be something serious. Mom motions for us to come sit down.
"Who died?" Rosa asks.
She said it like a joke but I knew that deep down she was seriously asking.
"No one died, honey." Mom says.
"So, what's going on?" I ask.
"Gavin has something to say." Dad says.
Rosa and I look at Gavin, confused. Rosa even gets up to sit next to him.
"What's wrong Gav?" Rosa holds his hand.
"I have something to confess... I've been... working with the cops." Gavin says.
Rosa lets go of his hand and stands up, confused.
"What?! What the hell do you mean? Have you been spying on my family? Is that why you wanted to get close to me?" She asks.
"Rosa, let him explain." Dad says.
Whatever his explanation is, it must be good if dad is defending him instead of having him killed.
"I never told you anybody this but I already knew Harrison before I met you, your family, and even before I become close with Rotimi...." he begins.
"How did you know Harrison?" I ask.
"He's the reason my cousin is dead. My cousin was a witness to something he did. My cousin knew the price he would have to pay if he snitched so he promised Harrison that he wouldn't say anything. But Harrison either didn't believe him or didn't care and he had my cousin killed. I've been working undercover trying to get Harrison caught and put in prison for life." Gavin says.
Rosa starts to calm down.
"Me working with the cops has nothing to do with your family. Honestly, your family even having issues with Harrison is just a strange coincidence... or maybe it's fate..." Gavin looks at me and Rosa.
"What do you mean fate?" Rosa asks.
"You know how I'm a music producer... well, working with that kind of technology isn't the only thing I'm good at. I know how to hack into almost anything so... I hacked into Harrison's phone and I've been keeping track of all texts and calls... and..."
Gavin looks like he doesn't to continue talking.
"And what?" I say.
"You know the meeting that your family is supposed to have with Harrison and Santiago.. and how you're supposed to trade Mac for the location of the cocaine... well, I tapped into one of Harrison's phone calls and he was talking to someone about the meeting and he's planning to secretly order someone to kill Mac as soon as he finds out the location of the drugs."
Rosa and I look at each other, shocked. My eyes even start to water.
"We can't let that happen!" I yell.
"Sweetheart, we won't let that happen." Mom tries to comfort me.
"So, what do we do now?" Rosa asks.
"Gavin is going to hack into the tracking device that inside of Mac so that we can get an exact location of where he is..." Dad says.
"And then we're going to go find him and bring him back home." Jeremy finished his sentence.
My mom looks at Jeremy and Brandon with sad eyes. I know that she doesn't want them involved but deep down she knows that we're going to need all the help we can get.
"We're going to rescue Mac during the meeting with Harrison and Santiago so that Harrison won't suspect anything. He doesn't know that we know about his plan to kill Mac so we want him to think that he has the upper hand." Marcelle adds.
"What are y'all going to do if they have people guarding Mac so that he can't escape?" I ask even though, deep down, I knew the answer.
"Don't worry about that. If anyone gets in our way, we'll handle them." Marcelle says, placing his gun on the table.
