Liza heads out of her house for her morning run. After she convinced David to start running again, she decided to increase her weekly runs to daily runs. She starts to head towards her local park, enjoying seeing all the kids playing there, wishing they were her own.
As she rounds the corner, she is surprised to find the park empty. But, she gets closer and sees a little girl, around 3 or 4, sitting on the park bench wrapped up in a big sweater. Her maternal instincts kick in, which she didn't know she had, and she re-routes to the park bench after checking the time on her watch. 8:45 a.m.
"Way to early for a little kid to be lost." She thinks to herself, and slows down to a steady walking pace.
She walks over to the child, trying not to startle her. "Hi." She squats down to the girls level. "What are you doing here all alone? We should get you back to your parents."
The girl winces at the mention of the word "parents". "Please, not them. I can't go back." The girl speaks, not sounding like a 4 year old at all. Liza is taken aback by this. Surely, looks can be deceiving, but not by this much.
"Ok. Can I take you to my house? Get you cleaned up and we can talk?" Liza asks kindly, moving her hand to rest on the girl's knee.
The nods before getting up, or rather, trying to get up. She falls as her legs are not strong enough to support her. "Is it ok if I carry you?" Liza asks once again, and the girl nods. Liza lifts the almost weightless girl into her arms.
"My name's Kaley, just so you know." Kaley says, moving to rest her head in Liza's neck. Just like Liza does when she needs David to protect her.
"Pretty name. I'm Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liza." Liza starts to head back towards her house with Kaley wrapped in her arms. "Can I ask you a quick question, Kaley?"
"Sure, fire away." Kaley says, giggling after. Her laugh makes Liza's heart flutter, just like when she's around David. She comes to the realization that this girl has the same effect on her as David does.
"How old are you?"
Kaley sighs. "I'm almost 8." Liza stops in her tracks, making Kaley worried.
"Oh my god, you're so malnourished." Liza says, continuing to walk up her driveway. "You poor child."
"My dad... he starved me. He..." Kaley tries to explain, but is overwhelm with emotions.
"Hey, you don't need to tell me anything yet, but I do want to feed you. Is that ok with you?" Liza says, setting Kaley down on the couch and walking over to her fridge across the room. She pulls out breakfast ingredients and starts to cook for the two of them.
She finishes putting the plates down on the table, Kaley digging in immediately, like she hasn't eaten in days. Which, by the looks of it, she probably hasn't. Just as Liza sits down, her phones start to ring. The contact shows Bubba.
"Stay right here, I'll be right back." Liza says, pushing in her chair and walking out of the room.
"Hey bubs." Liza says.
"Liza? What's going on?" David asks frantic.
"I don't know what you mean."
"It's all over Twitter and Instagram. Who's the girl?"
Liza sighs. "I found her at the park in my neighborhood. She's severely malnourished, David. I couldn't just leave her."
"Oh my god. Ok. Have you called the police yet?"
"Shit. No, I'll get on it after we hang up. I love you."
"I'm coming over, see you soon. I love you too."
She hangs up before quickly calling the police. They give her temporary custody over Kaley as long as the inspector approves the house. Liza thanks them and goes back out to see Kaley eating her set of breakfast.
"Sorry." Kaley says with a mouth-full.
"It's ok, you must be hungry. We can go to grocery store later and you pick out some snacks. Maybe get you some clothes." Liza says.
"Please! Wait... Why are you being so nice to me?" Kaley asks, not meeting Liza's eye.
"Because, it is the right thing to do. You clearly weren't in a good living situation, and I needed to help you. Now let's go upstairs and get you cleaned up." Liza picks Kaley up once again, her legs still too weak to support her, and walks up the stairs to her bathroom.

Hey guys! I'm turning this into a book! I feel like this could be a really good story and I've always wanted to create a story like this. The first chapter should be up.
I won't be able to post until Tuesday as I have a big project due Monday, which I haven't started. Procrastination! And I will be at an Accelerated Weekend Experience during most of the day.
Unedited. 837 Words.
