I had no plans for the weekend.
Doesn't that sound pathetic? Lisa and Zoey had Saturday jobs in the local stores and David was out of town to see his dad so I had no-one to hang out with. Dean had mentioned something about hunting for a second-hand piano, but that idea was shot down by the manager of the Arts Centre asking for my parents to come in and sort out their studio space.
'Come and find us for lunch,' Debbie said, handing me a twenty dollar note. I was still getting used to American money. In England, we have pence and pounds, but that's not how money works in America. I was picking up fast though - I just imagine twenty dollar note as a twenty pound note ... does that work? 'Go and see what's in town.'
That didn't take long. After having a small tour of the small selection of shops upmarket, I wondered further on up Main Street towards the park, enjoying the minicupal flowerbeds spilling over with bright autumn blooms. I passed the duck pond, mountain trees and shrubs.
I carried on walking until I arrived at some place looking glum and sad like a ghost town. I didn't like to think of the miner burried somewhere in the mountainside, crashed under tons of rock. After having a nosy peak around the buildings, I sat down and crossed my legs on the bench, wishing I had thought to buy a can of Coke and a chocolate bar before climbing all the way up here.
Colorado was just so big - everything on a scale unfamiliar to a British person.
A twig suddenly snapped behind me. Heart thumping, head full of ghosts, I twisted around to see Harry Styles hovering at the point where the track left the trees. He looked tired, shadows under his eyes that hadn't been there last week. His hair was mussed, as if he's been running his fingers through it repeatedly.
'Perfect - just what I need,' he said with cutting sarcasm, backing away.
Words not calculated to make a girl feel good about herself.
I got up. 'I'm going.'
'Forget it. I'll come back later.'
'I was just heading home anyway,' I replied.
He stood his ground and just looked at me. I had the strangest sensation that he was drawing something out of me, as if there was a thread between us and he was winding it in.
I shivered and closed my eyes, holding up a hand, palm towards him. I felt dizzy. 'Please,' I begged, 'don't do that.'
'Don't do what?' Harry asked.
'Look at me like that.' I blushed a furious red. He was probably thinking I'd gone mad. I'd imagined the thread after all. I turned on my heel and strode off into the closest building, leaving him near the bench, but he ended up following.
'Look at you like what?' he repeated, kicking aside a fallen plank of wood in his persuit. The whole place groaned; one puff of strong wind and I was sure it would collapse on our heads.
'I don't wanna talk about it,' I said as I marched ahead, making for the empty-framed window overlooking the valley. 'Forget it.'
'Hey, I'm talking to you.' He caught my arm but seemed to reconsider. 'Look ... er ... Kenzie, isn't it?' He cast his eyes upwards as if seeking guidance, not quite believing what he was about to do. 'I've got to tell you something, Kenzie.'
The breeze got under the eaves. I suddenly realised how far we were from other people. I rubbed the places where his fingers had dug into the skin.
He frowned, reluctant to even speak to me, but made himself do so. 'There's something you need to know.'
'What?'
'Be careful at night,' he warned. 'Just don't go out alone - they can't hurt you if you're with someone.'
'What do you mean?'
'The other night I saw ...' he trailed off, deciding to not continue. 'Look, just be careful, okay?'
No, not OK! He was one scary guy, I thought to myself.
'You've got that right.'
What? I hadn't just said that aloud, had I?
He swore and kicked the broken mining gear in frustration. The chain clanked to and fro, reminding me of a body swinging on the hangman's scaffhold. I hugged my arms to my chest, trying to make myself a smaller target.
This was my fault. I'd done something - I don't know what - something to set him off.
'No, you haven't!' he said the words sharply. 'None of this is your fault, do you understand?' He sighed and dropped his voice level. 'And I'm scaring the hell out of you, aren't I?'
I froze.
'Fine, I'll leave.' He strode off abruptly, disappearing between the empty buildings, swearing at himself under his breath.
So, that went well.
