I didn't wake properly until the next morning. Feeling numb, I cleaned my teeth with the hotel-supplied brush and paste, then I got dressed. My stomach growled. I went to help myself to a chocolate busuite and a bottle of Coke from the mini bar, then sat down to wait. I was in the middle of a crisis, but things were strangely calm.
I didn't dare risk trying to contact Harry again. O'Nate was probably up and about, and there's me not knowing enough about shield-busting to give it a go. I just hope Harry got my message to not come rushing in. We needed a plan to get me out, not a second hostage.
There was a knock at the door. Not behaviour I expected of my kidnappers. It opened to reveal Gator carrying a tray.
'Rise and shine, cupcake. You slept well?'
'No, not really. Thanks for asking though.' My voice was filled with sarcasm.
Ignoring my sarcasm, Gator dumped the tray on a table by the window. 'Breakfast. East quickly. The boss wants to see you.'
I nodded and looked down at the food. I took a few small bites then shoved it away, not really in the mood for a snack after the boss was mentioned. I was afraid of what he'd do to me and to Harry.
'I've had enough, thanks.' I stood up.
'Let's go.' He took firm grip of my upper arm and marched out into the hallway. We walked left, past a lift and into the waiting area. Through the window, I could see people sitting around a boardroom table. Gator knocked once, waiting for the green light, then entered with me in tow.
As soon as I walked in, I saw a girl, younger man and an older man. The one in the middle - the oldest man - had to be the boss.
'Here she is, Mr Kane,' said Gator. 'I'll wait outside. 'He gave me a push towards the table then walked out.
Mr Kane sat looking at me for a while without speaking, his fingers touching in an arch.
Finally he beckoned me closer. ''Come here.'
Reluctantly, I walked round the table.
'O'Nate said you are a savant. Is that correct?'
'I don't know.' I tucked my hands in my pockets to disguise the fact that they were trembling.
'You are. I can tell. It's a shame really - that you've been caught up like this.' He flahsed an unapologetic grin, displaying improbably even teeth.
The boy beside Mr Kane spoke up. 'Dad, are you sure the Styles will trade themselves for her?'
'Yes, they will try. They won't be able to stop themselves from trying to protect an innocent like her.'
The younger Kane poured a cup of coffee. 'And the police? They must be involved by now.'
'They'll never be able to trace is back to us. And she'll tell them exactly what I say.' Mr Kane leaned back in his chest.
'Not very strong though,' commented the younger woman; she had the looks of a wild cat, groomed by deadly. 'I could break her for you, Daddy.'
'Oh no, sweetheart. I don't want her broken just yet.'
The Styles had thought there only one savant involved; what they failed to anticipate was that the Kanes had powers like theirs. They had suddenly got a whole lot more complicated.
'You're wondering what we're going to do with you, aren't you, Kenzie?' Kane held his hand out to me, his face lined with disatisfaction.
I'd prefer to touch a snake, so I kept my hands in my pockets.
