((Finally got this out after working on this for like... 2 weeks? I'm such a procrastinator ))

I've been hiding in this boat for a few days now, as soon as I heard it was heading to America I had to get onto the ship as soon as possible.

My plan was to hide in the deck for now, and then I would sneak off when we arrived at land.

I left Britian for various reasons, but I won't go into much detail at the moment.

It was getting very boring on this old ship, I just wanted to get off before I get any more seasick. The rocking of the boat just drove me insane. I feel like if I sleep the time away I won't be awake when we make it to land.

So maybe that promise won't be fufilled as I felt my eyelids grow very heavy and before I knew it, I was asleep.

Ding, ding, ding!

The noises of what I recognized as a bell had awoken me, the rocking of the ship had stopped.I looked out of the small holes in between the wood and saw land!

At last! I can finally get off this stupid thing, and venture around!

I slowly and quietly tiptoed up the stairway, looking around corners just to be sure nobody would see my prescense.

"Okay.. I should be able to get out right-"

"Hey you! What are you doing on my ship!" I heard a yell from behind me, I quickly booked it and jumped off the side of the boat, into the water.

I felt adrenaline rush through my veins as I swam as fast as my muscles could take. By the time I reached shore I got up and never stopped running.

Hopefully I could just find an inn of some sort to stay in for now..

As I walked along the city streets, I was soaking wet looking even messier than usual. I was getting weird stares from many people, but I had pushed it aside for the meantime.

I wasn't very sure of where I was so I just an outsider to all these people. Before I could think anymore I felt myself trip and hit the ground.

I groan in pain and look up to see a few of the richer people start to laugh and point at me.

"Ha! Look at her, she is a disgrace to even be here. Nobody would love her." The woman had sassily said, the other men and women around her nodded in agreement.

I felt helpless, pathetic, weak. I was nothing against them. I looked at my hands which were a bit scratched up from my fall.

"Excuse me but that is no way to talk to a lady who has more kindness in her heart than what you could ever have." I turn to the new voice to see a handsome freckled man standing up for me.

I couldn't help but let my mouth agape.  He was standing up for me.

The woman and the rest of the people had simply scoffed and left. One of the last people to leave had kicked my back, leaving a sore pain to the touch.

The man who had stood up for me knelt down to my height level and brushed the hair out of my face.

"I'm sorry they treated you that way, no woman should ever have to experience that. I wish I could've been here sooner to stop them."

I looked up to him and had got a better look at his face. His features perfectly shown in the sunlight.

I didn't realize how close we were until now, I quickly backed away and mumbled my apologies.

I heard a light chuckle from the man, I felt like my heart would leave my chest.

"I've never seen you around before, did you come in one of the ships by the docks today?"

"Well, you can say that? Before I go on, can I know your name?"

"Only if you tell me yours as well."

"Of course, I'm (Y/N) (L/N)."

"I'm John Laurens, I'm sorry I didn't say my name any sooner." He let out an awkward laugh.

"Oh don't worry about it! The situation didn't really give a good opportunity to give any names."

I paused for a moment then I began to tell how I even got to where I was.

"A few days ago, I had fled my home country to escape from all of the people who had caused me harm. I lived in Britain, a beautiful place I'll admit. Although, the people there had hated me with a burning passion. For what reasons.. I did not know exactly."

John's eyes were fixated on my hands, as if he were taking in every single detail of them. I took his silence as a sign to continue.

"So from that moment I had decided it was time to finally leave that forsaken country. I waited for the boat to America stop at our docks. It took a few days, I had to hide in the deck and on the way out I got caught. So, the only thing I really could do was jump off the side of the boat into the water and swim to shore."

Before I could say anymore John brought me into a warm embrace. I felt a warm tear slip down my cheek. I didn't even notice that I was crying until that very moment.

"I'm so sorry for all of the things you had to go through, I wish I could've been by your side to help you before."

I smile ever so slightly. "John, you don't have to be sorry. We had lived an ocean away from each other. It couldn't have been helped at the time."

((I applaud anyone who caught that reference ;)))

"Even so, now that the war is over.. I shall be by your side so that you won't have to face anything horrible again. As long as I am here, you show everyone who (Y/N) (L/N) is and she is the most beautiful woman I have ever met."

I laugh as my cheeks warm up from his comment. "That was a bit cheesy, don't you think?"

"Psh, no way. It's true because it's facts m'lady." John swiftly picks me up bridal style and yells to he crowd of people around us.

"Ahem! I would like to make a quick announcement that this beautiful young woman is (Y/N) (L/N) and she has been through many trials in her life already. Although, she still has many to seek out for, so I, John Laurens will court this beauty if she lets me to begin a journey through a long lifetime!"

I stare wide-eyed at John, I simply met him just an hour ago. John had concluded his speech and looked at me with a wide grin.

"Hey, it's not like I'm asking you to marry me. I'm not even asking you to say yes to courting me, but I would love to accompany you through any and all of your travels to come."

I was still speechless, but it didn't stop John from speaking.

"So, (Y/N).. what is your answer?"

A bright smile finally flashes upon my face. "I would be more than delighted to have you accompany me, John."
