Marshall's P.O.V

I saw the lights. I heard the screams. I found the seared body of my girl in a crater.

I loved Fionna. And she was taken by rage.

She had drowned in the lava.

My beloved was gone.

The End.

...

Just Kidding.

There was a screaming, deafening silence as my son thought hard.

"But, daddy," he began. "If... Fionna died, then why is she in the kitchen cooking our dinner?"

I smiled at my son. "Okay. That's not the end. I lied. But, there is a lot of story left, son. Are you sure you don't just want me to stop here?"

"No! No! More! More!" my son shrieked with excitement as he clapped his hands together and bounced up and down eagerly.

I chuckled. "Okay. Forget that last part. Let's go back to the bit where your Mommy lost consciousness."

Fionna's P.O.V

As I regained consciousness in the lava, at the bottom of the pit, new memories began to surface.

I was Lava Princess. An experiment done by Gumball about 300 years ago (explaining my previous crush on him). I was a spirit of lava, a guardian, if you will. I was destined to awake the moment the world received a threat greater than the Lich. But, after 300 years of inactivity, I began to fizzle out. So, 17 years since today, he transferred me to a real body - the body I inhabited. There, I would live until the body died, at which point I would find a new body.

There were some side effects. When my spirit and Fionna's spirit merged, the body reacted. The baby girl burnt her parents and sibling to ashes, before I finally settled in. This rendered my body as the last human alive. It also explains why I was raised by cats - because I unwittingly killed my family.

As the Lich was still the greatest threat the world had ever seen, I had not awoken. But the Lich's son was stronger than her, being younger. Therefore, I woke up.

Gumball's refusal to date me was also explained. When the time came for Lava Princess to awake, I would likely kill him. So he kept me distant.

My crush on Flame Prince could be explained by Lava Princess's way of keeping watch on the Lich's son. But that was unlikely.

Whatever the case, I now had powers over lava.

And it felt horrible. I hated how the substance shot from my hands. But it was the only way to stop the Lich's son.

I set my hands ablaze and threw huge lots of lava towards the flaming entity. There was a cry of pain, and the green light lessened. In that moment, I fled.

It wasn't cowardice. But Lava Princess would ruin my life if we kept our spirits merged.

"Gumball!" I called through the castle, lava pouring uncontrollably from my fingertips.

He ducked out of his science lab. "Fionna?" He stared at the lava.

"Can you... separate?" I coughed as lava bubbled up from my lungs.

"I can try. But first, stop the Lich. Then I'll help." Gumball waved me away.

Sighing, I fled back to the battlefield.

Flame Prince was gone.
