I had no idea why he came here (first time in forever), but just then, Thomas turned his head and saw Beckett there as well. Thomas suddenly rested his eyes on Beckett and hurried towards him. I put on a confused look. "Were these two friends? Best friends? Brothers?" Next thing I knew, Thomas ran up to Beckett and immediately started a conversation. I couldn't make out what he was saying since they were too far away from me.
I grew slightly suspicious of Beckett, but I never did anything to help it. I never bothered to ask him of his relationship with Thomas. Again, because I didn't want to spoil something going so well.
A few days later, I went to board the bus in the morning, but just when I was about to sit down, a force grabbed my arm and threw me to the ground. I looked up with my hands at my side to see who the culprit was. To no surprise, it was Thomas.
"Why were you sitting here? This is my spot. Beckett is my best friend; not yours. Don't get any ideas. You will never be good enough to sit with us."
And with that, Thomas turned his attention towards Beckett. Thomas opened his mouth to say something, but the moment he did, Beckett stopped gazing out the window and stood up. Without even looking at him, Beckett walked past Thomas into the bus aisle and picked me off of the ground. He helped me into the seat right behind the first and then sat next to me. I looked at him with a surprised expression, and he just smiled at me. I looked straight ahead and saw an angry boy throwing a sudden tantrum. Frustrated, Thomas stood up from his seat and stomped to the back of the bus. I looked back at Beckett and I was just amazed. How was it that this boy touched my heart so dearly within 30 seconds without even saying a single word? He continued to look out the large window before us.
"Isn't it beautiful?" he said.
"What is?"
He pointed straight ahead, "That, the sunrise. This is why this is my favorite spot. I make sure I have it everyday. Little selfish right? Well, I want to share it with you now. Promise me you'll sit here with me everyday and watch the sunrise and sunset together."
Stunned, I simply nodded my head, and he smiled.
"Good. Oh, and I have something for you," and with that, he pulled out two humanoid popsicle sticks.
"Sorry I didn't make you an airplane today, but I made you this."
He gave me the sticks.
"They're us," he pointed, "That one is you, and this is me."
I smiled at them and gave him my thanks.
"Don't worry, I'll make you an airplane tomorrow."
We smiled at each other and continued to watch the sunrise the rest of the way.
From that day on, he began to sit at lunch with me and protect me from the other students. Whenever they would throw crumbs at me, he would make a wall with our lunchboxes to stop them. He would also sit with me underneath the slide and watch the other kids play. Of course every once in a while, we would come out and chase each other or something. The only thing that bothered me was that Thomas was in my class and Beckett wasn't. It always made me nervous when Thomas kept looking at me with those green eyes.
Just when we were about to board the bus to go home, Thomas pulled me by my arm and took me behind the school.
"I don't know what you think you're doing, but you should stop it. Beckett is mine and only mine. He can't be friends with anyone else, especially you. What's so great about you, Avery? Let me tell you something. You'll never be like us. You'll never be smart, or funny, or pretty, or rich, or successful, or wanted, or anything. You'll forever be the loser like you are right now. Nothing will change. The worst part about this is that Beckett is too blind to see that. He has a kind heart and you don't deserve him. Stay away from him."
With that, he walked off, and I ran to the bus. I did my best not to cry because I didn't want to be questioned later. I proceeded to get on the bus as if nothing had ever happened.
"Hey, where were you?"
"Oh, I was just talking to the teacher about something."
"Oh okay."
We rode off as usual that day watching the sunset, except that wasn't the thing I had in mind.
