The first person I wanted to talk to the next day was Gabrielle, so I picked up my phone and dialed her number.
"Hello?"
"Gabby! Guess what!?"
"Um, did you get a raise?"
"No, Beckett asked me out!"
"OMG! What!? When did this happen!?"
"Yesterday."
"Holy crap, I'm so happy for you," and the squealing continued.
"I know right me too."
"Wait, you did say yes right?"
"Of course."
"Hah! I knew you liked him."
"Shut up."
"I was right. When is the next time you guys are going on a date?"
"I don't know. He didn't say."
"That's a bummer. Well, you guys are still cute. Anyway, I have to go now; I have work."
"Okay, bye bye."
"Bye, Avery. Congratulations!"
She hung up on me, and I fell back on my bed still wondering if this was surreal. Then, a thought came across my mind: What would Emily think of this? Would she try to kill me? Would she try to kill Beckett? What if they aren't broken up, and he's cheating on me!? Maybe I need to stop worrying so much. I'm sure he will handle her ASAP.
Monday
I wanted to pick a day where Josh was in a very neutral mood. Not too sad, or else he might get depression or something, and not too happy, or else that might kill his mood. However, this day was strange. It was already almost midday, and I haven't see him once.
At lunch time, I invited Beckett to come sit with us. I don't know exactly what he thinks about Gabby, but I don't think he dislikes her. If he does, I hope tells me. Not that I'm going to do anything about it if he doesn't, but it's just good to know in deciding whether or not he's a keeper.
All of sudden, I saw Josh walk into the cafeteria, rather late, and grab a microphone.
"Excuse me, everybody, may I have your attention? There's something I want to say," The whole cafeteria went silent, "Good, thank you. Now, I don't like to beat around the bush, so I'll get straight to the point. Avery Zara, you are just so beautiful in everything you do and just an amazing person all around. Will you do me the honor," he grabbed a bouquet of flowers from his friend and started to walk towards me, "of being my girlfriend?"
All the girls started gossiping and getting excited while all the guys awaited my answer. Perhaps I waited too long to reply because everyone started chanting.
"Say yes! Say yes! Say yes!"
I was still shocked that this was even happening, but before I could even say one word, Beckett popped out from behind me and shoved him to the ground. Josh fell hard catching his weight with hands while Beckett just put his in his pockets.
"Don't you dare do that ever again," Beckett said without making eye contact with him.
"Why do you care?" There was a pause.
"Because she's my girlfriend," The whole room gasped at his words, and Josh sat there dumbfounded.
At first, he was in denial, "No she's not."
Beckett remained silent and just turned his head towards me. I slowly nodded afraid of Josh's reaction.
Josh's eyes widened. He hastily stood up and grabbed my wrist leading me off to God knows where. Beckett just sat back down with Gabrielle.
"What? You're not going after her?"
"No, I trust her."
"Woah, that's rare."
Meanwhile, Josh led me behind the school. He put his hands on his knees as if he was exhausted.
"Since when?" He straightened his spine.
"Saturday," He threw his back on the wall with his head tilted up and eyes closed. Out of nowhere, he grabbed my shoulders and pushed me towards the bricks.
"You can't be with him. Why did you choose that jerk? Didn't you know how I felt about you? Why couldn't you just wait?"
"Josh, I-"
"No, I can't let you do this," His face started nearing mine, but I used all my might to push him away. Of course, that quickly failed, so I just resorted to hitting him and screaming his name until I landed a clean one right across the side of his face.
I managed to escape, but right as I turned the corner, I saw Beckett. I shot back to reality when I heard quick footsteps growing louder by the second. My instincts took control, and I ran right to Beckett and hid behind his back. Usually, I try to act tough in these kinds of situations, but this was different. This was a close friend, therefore, it was much more difficult for me to stand up to him.
A few seconds past, and Josh followed behind my footsteps just to come across us together. He immediately stopped to look at the sight. He started to chuckle. Has this boy gone mad?
"Is this how it's going to be? You just steal her away from me? Just like that?" He chuckled once more unable to trust his senses, "Ridiculous; you are ridiculous," and he turned around and walked off.
After he was out of sight, I spoke: "Forgive him. He doesn't mean it," I looked up at him to see his eyes still locked on, what used to be, Josh.
I held onto his arm, "Thank you for being here with me though," but he just remained silent.
