Chapter 17

I try my best to do well in school. I'm in advanced classes and try to get involved in extracurricular activities because colleges love that. Anyway, on my way to class one day, I saw a poster advertising auditions for a school play. Only the teachers and parents really ever go to these things, so I said sure. Why not?

That same day, I arrived at the audition after school along with several other students

That same day, I arrived at the audition after school along with several other students.

"Hello guys. Thank you all for coming today. The play this year will be performed at the elementary school, and they wanted the theme to be Disney. I have decided that we will do our own take on Aladdin." She passed a couple pieces of paper to everyone. "Here are your lines. You all have 20 minutes to prep, and then we will start. Good luck everyone."

I looked at the script and it was just a couple of lines from a variety of different scenes in the play.

1 Hour Later

I volunteered to be one of the first people to audition because she told us we could go home after we were done. I was feeling rather tired (like always) and rushed home to take a nap before practice.

2 Days later

Today was Friday and also the day we get to see the cast list. I didn't want to be caught in the crowd after school, so I decided to just take a peek during lunch.

I didn't have much acting experience, so I started to looking for my name from the bottom up. My eyes met with the bottom of the paper and slowly started to make their way up. About three quarters of the way up, I started to wonder to myself: *Did I even make the list at all?*

There it was. Surprisingly I was playing Princess Jasmine. I was ecstatic and lowkey proud of myself. After a little, happy celebration, I started to wonder who was playing Aladdin and low-&-behold. Guess who it was. Yup, of course it's him. He's going to play my "lover." How the heck did I not see him at auditions!? I scoffed at the thought.

"Yeah right. I better be a really good actor to cover this up."

I was deciding if I should back out or not, but thought I  just needed to man up and suck it up. Has he seen the board yet? Any thoughts?

I went back into the cafeteria to report to Gabby about the cast list

I went back into the cafeteria to report to Gabby about the cast list.

"Wow really? What are you going to do?"

"I'm still going to do it. There's no way I'm letting him get to me."

"Hmm," she said with a suspicious tone.

"What?"

"Nothing, just thinking."

"About?"

"Josh"

*sigh* "Do you still have a crush on him?"

"What do you mean STILL? Of course I do."

"Well I mean if I can't convince you otherwise, I might as well help you."

"Would you really do that for me, Avery?"

"Why not?"

She shrieked with excitement. "I'm so excited. What are you going to do?"

"I have no idea."

"Whatever it's going to be, I'm sure it'll be good."

"I hope."

Throughout the rest of the day, I tried to think of ways I could set up Josh and Gabrielle together. On my way out the building. I saw Josh walking by himself, so I went ahead and made my way to him.

"Hey, Josh!"

"Oh hey, Avery. How are you?"

"I'm good, and you?"

"I'm doing okay I guess."

"That's good."

We talked for a little while until we had to get on the bus. I was actually excited. It felt like I was playing matchmaker. Since our meeting went so well, I figured this wouldn't be so hard.

3 Weeks Later

So Josh actually turned out to be an alright guy. We became good friends and have been in contact ever since a few weeks ago. I mentioned Gabrielle to him a couple of times, but he seemed to just brush the idea of her off his shoulders every time. I think it will get better in time.

In addition, we had rehearsals for our play almost everyday after school. We got a new drama teacher this year, and she seems to be pretty serious about theatre. If I can recall, our performance is in about a month.

At the end of the play, there is a kissing scene between Jasmine and Aladdin at their wedding. I made sure to tell Beckett to not really kiss me on the lips. I specifically said anywhere but there. He, being a little jerk, just replied to my request as if he was only half listening to what I had to say. At least he obeyed when we were rehearsing that part. I can't wait for cleanup week...just kidding.

2 Weeks Later

I sat down at the lunch table with Gabby as usual.

"Hey, Gabby. What's up?"

"Oh nothing much, but do you want to see what I found?"

I began to grow weary of what's next. "Um, okay. What is it?"

She handed me her phone and I, almost immediately, started to feel flustered.
