The next day, my mind was in a whole other universe, and apparently it showed. Gabrielle waved her hand in front of my face, but I was still in a daze.
"Avery? Avery?" she said to try to get my attention, but I ignored it just as she predicted. She pinched my cheeks, but still nothing. There was only one more thing Gabrielle could think of, take a selfie. There was no reaction, but she still took it.
Upon entering the school, my eyes caught the boy from yesterday. I tried to convince myself that Beckett was just a figure of my imagination, but how could I now? Apparently, he felt my gaze and looked back. We stared at each other dead in the eyes for a whole five minutes (at least that's what it felt like).
Now I was almost certain, almost. I waited until lunch time for my confirmation. When the bell rang at 11:40, I headed straight for his locker. There he was, plain in sight. I walked up to him and asked if he knew me. There was no reply, he just continued to look at me with a blank expression. I looked deep into his eyes and was just reminded of my life ten years ago. The resemblance looked so similar, it had to be him. I looked at him with wide eyes.
"Oh my God," I murmured under my breath. Wasting no more time, I reached my arms up to wrap around his neck and pull him down to my level. After a few seconds, he grabbed my arms and forcefully pulled them of him.
"Are you crazy?" he scoffed and walked off his own path. I couldn't believe my eyes or mind.
"Is he really THAT Beckett? I started to question myself hard. I thought I was for sure, but his actions just now seem to contradict that. Perhaps he didn't recognize me because I had changed so much. I had to make him remember. I know he has to remember me."
Unknowingly, I was thinking aloud, and people started giving me that strange look when they walked into the cafeteria. I opened my locker to take out my meal, then bluntly walked to lunch. All the while, my mind so focused on the same subject.
Gabrielle looked at me and said, "Are you still a ghost? Avery? Avery!"
"How do you get someone you haven't seen in ten years to remember you?" I said as if I was in a rush.
"Um, what?" she looked at me extremely confused (I never told her about Beckett).
"Answer the question."
"Um, gee I don't know. I would lead him into a room and forcefully show him memories of us."
I nodded my head in agreement.
"What's with you lately? What's going on?" she asked concerned with my mental health.
"Well it might seem crazy, but I think my childhood best friend has finally found his way back to me. You know the new kid? I think that's him. I just need a way for him to remember me."
"Well you know there is one tactic that you could try."
My head leaned in closer to take a good listen.
"You could talk to him about it instead of obsessing over it from afar!"
"Ugh, I thought you were going to say something helpful. I already did that."
"And?"
"He doesn't seem to recognize me."
"Hmm, I see your point now. Well I already told you what I would do. You should try it."
I looked down at my hands, "Can you help me?"
Gabrielle nodded her head, "Sure, I will tell him that Mr. Cooper wants to see him in his room tomorrow morning."
"Gabby, how am I going to be able to use his room without him in it?"
"Ask him today to leave his door open so you can come in tomorrow morning and work. He's really nice so he should agree."
"Gabby, what would I do without you?"
"You know how you should thank me? Take me to the mall on Saturday and buy me an ice cream."
I chuckled, "Haha, okay."
