Jerome's PoV:
I glanced out the window and sighed, seeing Ryan working on that old beat up Volkswagen again. He was costing us a fortune on parts, but he didn't care. He was determined. I admire him for it but...ugh. Grabbing a water bottle from the fridge, I went out to the backyard for a 'visit.'
I snuck up to him, and nudged his foot. He jumped, banging his head on the bottom of the car. "Fuck!" He yelled. I frowned as he scooted out on his little wheely thing that was like a skateboard. He had a grimace on his face, but it changed when he saw me.
I handed him the water bottle, and he grinned, popping the cap off and gulping down about half of it in one go. When he finished, he swiped his hand across his mouth. "Thanks babe." He winked at me before laying back down, and rolling under the car once more.
"Hey Jerome, can you hand me that wrench by your feet?" He called, his voice muffled. I looked down, and sure enough, a monkey wrench lay at my feet. I picked it up, and placed it in his waiting hand. Then there was silence. Except for the occasional grunt from Ryan, or groan of metal. This went on for a few minutes, and then I gave up on trying to get him to talk.
"I'll just go inside, Ryan." I mumbled, turning around. "Wait babe!" I froze, hoping he was gonna stop on the car. "Pass me that tray of bolts before you go." I glared at his feet, nudging the tray with my toes. I turned around and left in a huff.

Six hours later, a sweaty, greasy Ryan came in the back door, Cooper trotting in behind him. I sat at the kitchen table, crunching numbers and going over them and over them.
"Whatcha up to, babe?" He asked, grabbing a clean dishrag and wiping his grubby hands. That was it. I saw red.
"You really want to know what I've been up to? Babe? I have been going over our bills, and pay stubs, and you know what? We're seven grand in debt! And do you want to know why? Because if your goddamn obsession with that stupid car! It has got to go Ryan! And if it doesn't, I will." I ranted, and by the time I was done, I was out of breath.
He stood there, eyes wide and frozen. Cooper left the room, whining. He didn't say anything, and I got angrier. "Well, since you're obviously picking that piece of junk over me, I'll start getting my things together." I said curtly, getting up to leave the kitchen.
I was just getting to the living room when his hand caught my wrist. I whirled around, and refused to let the tears fall down.
"What do you want Ryan, you made your decision." He grabbed my other wrist, and pulled me to him. "I'm so sorry Jerome..I-I had no idea...please don't go.." He whispered, his voice cracking.
I almost forgave him right there, but I had to hold strong. "What about the debt? How are we gonna magically fix that? We barely make enough as it is, and I don't need you spending what little excess money we have on car parts!" I was fuming again, and struggled out of his grip.
"I'll get a second job, a third. Anything. Just please..don't leave me. I love you.." He said, and I saw tears fall down his cheeks. His shoulders shook, and he looked away. I turned back, and wrapped my arms around him.
"I love you too, Ryan." I murmured, my tears finally falling, and I gripped him tightly. "I love you so much"
