I woke up to a room I knew well. The ICU.  It took all of my strength to turn my head to the right. What I saw took all the air in the world away.

Augustus.

"Augustus?" I croaked. Tears flooded my eyes.

"Hazel Grace." He smiled his crooked smile. His bright blue eyes lit up. "Okay?"

"Okay." Augustus's smile widened. He limped over and kissed me on the forehead.

"I love you," he said. "Okay? Okay." Tears shone in his eyes. "Don't you worry about me, Hazel Grace. Take care of yourself until I come back. And our little one, too." Augustus smiled and kissed me again, and then he was gone.

I started to cry. "Come back, Gus, please." I could almost hear him saying "The world is not a wish-granting factory."

"I miss you so much, Augustus," I said quietly. I closed my eyes to sleep, but the door opened and a nurse came in.

"Hello, Hazel," she said. Her voice was high-pitched. Everything about her was small, except for her big green eyes. She flipped her long, red hair behind her back. "I'm Kayla and I'm your nurse."

"Hello, Kayla My Nurse," I said with a weak grin.

"How ya feeling?" she asked. I shrugged, but winced. "Yeah, you probably shouldn't move. Your lungs are wasted. Did you know that-"

"Yes," I interrupted. Kayla bit her lip. She shifted foot to foot.

"It's affecting your lungs," Kayla said. "You're gonna find it increasingly hard to breathe. It could worsen your cancer." She continued to babble, but I wasn't listening. The same words played over and over again: It could worsen your cancer. My cancer was already bad, so if that happens... No. I'd refuse to think about it. I didn't want to face the facts.

"Are you okay?" Kayla asked. I shook my head and slumped into the bed. "Hey. Remember I said 'could'." I nodded. "It's a possibility, not determined, Hazel." I nodded again. She smiled and left me and my own messed-up thoughts alone.
