I remember when I first found out I had cancer. I'd gone home, dragged myself onto my bed, and cried myself silly. Now, the news was finally hitting me. Three weeks later, I was bawling my eyes out like a small child. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I was "in love" with Isaac. Dumb, dumb dumb.

When I'd finally gotten a grip (weak, but still a grip), I found myself on Isaac's doorstep. I had no idea what I was doing there, but I rang the doorbell anyway. I tried to remember why I was there.

Oh, God. Right.

"Hi," Isaac said from the doorstep.

"Isaac, it's Hazel."

"Oh my God I was just gonna talk to you. Come in." I had a strange combination of dread and excitement as I made my way through his house and up the stairs. At the top, I wheezed.

"Oh, right. Sorry, Hazel," Isaac said, "I forgot. I guess I got a little ahead of myself."

"No, it's fine," I panted. We waited a minute. Isaac kept twitching, practically, in excitement or anxiety. I then followed him to what I assumed was his room. It was plain with blue walls, no posters. It was a repectable size and the bathroom and closet were spacious. I sat on the floor. He sat on his bed. Isaac started fidgeting.

"Um, Hazel?"

"Yes, Isaac?"

"Oh, ee, ah," he said.

"Isaac," I said, "you can tell me anything."

"Oh. Okay." He took a deep breath and prepared himself. "Hazel Grace Lancaster," he started, "would you like to go on a date with me?"

I wanted it, but I was still taken aback.

"I- yes," I said quietly. He cheered and actually leaned quickly forward and found my lips. He seemed to realize what was going on because he pulled back with an astonished expression.

"Oh, Hazel, I'm so sorry."

I waved it away. Isaac gave me the skinny on the date and I left with a spring in my step.
