I play with Ethan. I remembered everything that had happened. How hard it had been to take care of Ethan while watching over myself. It had been fun, challenging. I loved it. I had learned so much. Maybe it wasn't easy, but I loved it. I loved Ethan. That was that.

"Momm," he whines as he tries to throw the baseball at me. I laugh and get back to the present. After a few more minutes, we go inside. I get him a snack. I come back and kiss his forehead. I loved him so much.

There's a knock on the door. I drift over to it. I open the door.

My

heart

stops.

I can't breathe. I can't think. I can't do anything. I'm completely frozen.

"Hazel Grace," he says. He looked just like him. He talked just like him. Was it really him?

"Augustus Waters," I whispered. I swallow down the frog in my throat. "Is it really you?" This man that looked like Gus nods and smiles a crooked smile. My heart snaps in half.

"I missed you," I say. A sob escapes my throat. He hugs me and Ethan appears behind me.

"Who are you?" he says. I smile.

"This is your father," I say. Augustus smiles and hugs him slowly. Ever the kind one, Ethan embraces his dad. I smile and choke on my cries. Augustus turns to me again. He pulls me close by the waist.

"We promised always," he whispers. I nod and melt into him.

I think there's a way to tell sad stories. On one hand, you could sugar coat it. And nothing is too messed up that it can't be fixed with an apology and a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version as much as the next girl does, believe me. It's just not the truth. This is the truth.

You're welcome.
