And our little one, too. Just the way he'd said it made me ache inside. He wanted me to take care of myself.
AUGUSTUS, YOU COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, I wanted to scream. But I regreted it instantly. It wasn't his fault he got cancer again and died. It wasn't my fault, either, that this was happening (or so I told myself).
I saw my phone on a small table next to me. I reached for it. Then I looked for Isaac's number. I put it to my ear. It was about to go to voicemail when he picked up.
"Hazel?" Isaac asked.
"Hey, Isaac. Yeah, it's me. Monica-"
"Silent as ever. She's horrible."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm in the hospital." I heard him gasp. "I'm okay, though," I added quickly.
"Okay. Okay, then. Good."
"Hey, can I talk to you in person as soon as I'm out? Which is, I think, in two days?"
"Sure Hazel. Wanna meet at two?"
"Sure," I said.
"Okay. See you then." He hung up. I sighed. I was already regretted asking him. I had no idea how he would react to it. But it was too late now.
