The moment I got home, I heard sniffling and crying.

Oh, God.

"Mom, Dad?" I called. "Are you home?"

"Hey, sweetie," Mom said, her voice sounding like she'd been crying. "We're fine. Can you come into the living room?"

"Mom?" I pulled Philip in to the living room behind me.

My parents were emotional wrecks.

Their faces were red and blotchy. Noses were running. Sniffles were sniffled. Hands were touching. They weren't even trying to be strong.

"Hey, honey," Dad said.

"What happened?" I asked in disbelief.

"We were talking about-" Dad gestured to me, but in the midsection region. He started crying crying again.

"I'm so sorry," I choked. I HATED hurting them like this.

"Sweetie, come here," Mom said. Slowly, I complied. She wrapped her arms around me, as did Dad. "We'll always love you, Hazel. We swear we will. This is just a thing. It's gonna be okay. Got it?"

"Okay," I whispered. Dad sniffled.

"I love you guys so much," I added. We sat like that for a time before we just decided to break apart.
