It was a week after Isaac and Monica had gotten back together when Isaac called me again.
"Hello, Hazel," he said. His voice was formal. Oh my God, I thought. Don't be formal for heaven's sake.
"Hi, Isaac," I said. I ditched all formality. "How ya doin'?"
"I'm fine. Mon and I are getting along nicely considering everything I guess."
"That's great, Isaac!" I exclaimed. "I'm guessing that isn't all you wanted to tell me?"
He cleared his throat. "Um, yes. Well, uh, Gus's parents finally went through all of his stuff thoroughly and found a red notebook that was hidden in his room. His parents read through it and they think it might be the promised sequel for An Imperial Affliction." I had been sitting in front of my computer eating a bowl of pretzels and watching funny cat videos when he had called me. I choked on the bite of pretzel and fell out of my seat in shock.
"Hold on wait what?!" I said. "Oh my God lemme get over there holy crap!" I got up and sprinted as fast as my lungs allowed to my car.
"Hazel, are you okay?" Mom asked.
"Gus emergency be right back," I said. My lungs felt like a balloon ready to pop. I hopped into the car and drove as fast as I dared.
I arrived at the Waters residence a few minutes faster than usual. I hurried up the steps and rang the doorbell. As soon as the door was opening, I burst out, "Augustus wrote something for me? Can I see it?" Mrs. Waters smiled at me.
"Of course, Hazel." She lead me inside. A red, battered notebook sat on the counter of the kitchen. I snatched it greedily. "You can keep it, Hazel. We don't need it."
"Thank you so much, Mrs. Waters," I said, throwing my arms around her. She stiffened at first but then hugged me back with warmth.
"Come by anytime, honey. We'll always be here for you." She escorted me to my car and watched me drive away. I had to wait a while to read this sequel, but that was okay. I needed to read it to Isaac too. We would get to hear it at the same time.
