It's been two days since I made that promise to Spring. Speaking of Spring I haven't seen him since role call. He hasn't talked to me all day so far. I see him standing in the usual corner with the group. I quickly make my way over smiling. Usually the group smiles when I approach but this time they all look extremely worried about something. My smile quickly falls and I join the circle. The circle is unusually small today. Wait, where's Timmy and Tammy? Are they still working? No. They wouldn't be. Right? I tug on Leah's coat. She looks down at me.
"What's up, Sweetheart?" she asks giving me a fake small smile.
"Where's Timmy and Tammy?" I ask.
"It's D-Day today..." whispers Mitch shuffling around awkwardly.
"What's D-Day?"
"It stands for doctor day. It's when-"
Alex cuts Mitch off.
"It's when we get dragged off and they torture and break us and hurt us with surgery."
Leah flashes him a dirty look. Why does D-Day sound so familiar. I think back to my history lessons with one of my private tutors.
"But I thought D-Day was a good thing. Wasn't it on the day of the Normandy landings? When they liberated Europe from Nazi Germany?"
"...Drop the subject kid..." says Spring through his teeth.
Why won't he look at me?
"But-"
He cuts me off quickly.
"Just drop it!" he exclaims shoving his hands in his pockets.
A million thoughts cross my mind. Does Spring hate me now? What did I do wrong? Was it my fault? Was it something I said? Was it something I did? Will Spring still want to be my friend? My family? What if-? No. I have to drive those thoughts out of my head. Spring made a promise to me. He'll keep it. I'm sure he will. I look at Spring and catch him looking at me. He quickly looks down at his feet and says walking away,
"I have to go..."
We watch him go. When he's out of earshot I look back up at Leah and ask,
"What's wrong with Spring?"
Mitch sighs.
"I don't think that we should be the ones to tell you that..."
I nod my head.
"Yin, I want you to realize that no matter what happens Spring will always care about you." says Leah.
"I know. He told me that himself."
Leah smiles at me.
"Dagenhart?!" A loud stern voice yells making me jump. Mitch, Alex, and Leah all stare at the ground again.
"Look at me when I'm speaking to you!" snaps the guard.
I quickly spin around looking up at the guard in front of me.
"The doctor's ready for you now." He says with a smirk putting a hand on my shoulder.
He starts to lead me away. I look back at the group and see that Spring has rejoined them. They all look at me with worried looks. But Spring seems to be sad.
He's...crying.
