So the next day, we walked into headquarters, just as impressed with the building as I was my first time here.
"Who is that?" Yagami asked.
"My mother," I said and sat down at my usual spot.
"So you brought her to a private police taskforce headquarters?" He raised his brow.
"Would you rather I be rude and left her at my place all day?" I snapped.
"Nietzsche." Mom sighed and my brow raised at her. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Sharon."
"The hospital bombing makes sense now." L hummed, suddenly standing beside me, looking at my mom. "Cancer, is it?" He studied the scarf on her head.
"Shut up," I mumbled, and he fell quiet but looked sideways at me.
"If you want to talk, I'm here." He said only for me to hear.
"Later," I murmured back. I felt I could trust him with this.
"And who's this?" Mom came over to us two, still smiling that warm smile of hers.
"This is L." I introduced. She's looked much worse in the past, but even when she's been frail and sick as can be, her smile is still warm and welcoming, reaching her eyes, which were always the shade of honey with little green specks.
"L. Nice to meet you." Mom smiled at him.
"You, too, Sharon." He smiled and Matsuda came up with a cup of tea for her.
"No fair. You never bring me tea." I frowned.
"Honey, that's probably because he's scared of you." Mom said and blew on her cup. "Matsuda, you've no reason to be scared. She wouldn't hurt you." Mom smiled sweetly at him.
"I'm sorry, have you seen her videos? Do you even know what your daughter's been up to?" Yagami nearly growled at her, making me get defensive.
"Cool it, honey." Mom said to me in English, her Southern accent calming me right down, then turned to the cop.
"I don't agree with what she's been doing, but she makes her own choices." Mom said coolly.
"You're saying this like she's just getting tattoos or doing drugs. She's killing people. She turned children into murderers." He argued.
"She's not your kid. You wouldn't understand." Mom snapped and he fell silent, looking a little scared. "Don't try to understand."
She then turned and went to the table and looked through my bag. "Ah, Dorian Gray. One of your favorites." She smiled at me, set down her tea, and opened it up to read.
"That was scary. She looked just like you when you were mad." Light said.
"Where do you think I learned it from?" I sighed and went to sit by her and start coloring a new page of tessellations.
It took a little while before the question was asked.
"So, Nietzsche, if your mom is here, where is your dad?" Matsuda asked offhandedly.
My hand stopped moving and Mom stopped reading for a second, her eyes frozen on the page.
She cleared her throat after a moment. "He-"
"I don't have a dad." I cut her off, keeping my eyes down, and felt her looking at me. I peeked up, letting my green eyes meet her golden ones. "What? That's the quick and simple of it." I shrugged.
Mom just sighed and went back to reading. My hand began to cramp and I packed my shit.
"Where are you going?" Mom asked.
"To take a nap," I said, going in the direction of L's room.
"That girl and her naps. When she was a teenager, she used to sleep sixteen hours a day. Swear to God." Mom said.
"She still does sometimes." Armonia sighed and she chuckled.
I rolled my eyes and got into his room, kicked off my shoes, took off my bra and pants, then fell on the bed, not bothering to cover myself in blankets yet.
I simply let my eyes close and after a yawn, I drifted off.

FanfictionI'd like to say our story started when I was handed the Death Note by the golden, bejeweled Death God, but that's not the true beginning of my story if I'm being honest. No, my story started years in advance, before this murder book found its way to...
