Chapter 33: Let’s Take This Slow...
Mum called half an hour ago, saying she’ll be here in fifteen minutes. May be she’s stuck in traffic or something. I decide to make something for her to drink for when she comes home. I don’t know why, but I do. I get up and head to the kitchen. I grab a few apples, sugar and some cold water. If you have not guessed yet, I am going be making apple juice for her. I decide to do it the traditional way by scrapping apple into sugar water. Once I’m done I check my mobile. It’s almost 2 now. I’ve been waiting for an hour for her to come.
I fill the juice in a jug and put it in the fridge. Waiting for someone is really very boring. So I decide to text Ron.
-Hi babe:*
Ron- Hey:* What’s up?
-Waiting for my mother to come home:/
Ron- What? You want me to come?
-No. Um, actually I called her here.
Ron- Oh. Okay. Call me if you need me there:*
-Okay. Anyways, gtg. Bye:*
And I put my phone down as I hear the doorbell ring. I rush towards the door and stop before opening the door. My hands tremble and I feel nervousness building up. I hesitate at first but then I take a deep breath and twist the door handle. There she is, standing there, holding three huge bags in her hand, with a huge smile across her face that reach till her eyes. Not a fake one. A genuine one.
She tries to hug me but her bags get stuck in the door and I chuckle as she huffs with frustration and drops her bags down. Then she quickly pulls me into a hug. I stand there not knowing what to do. I hesitate to wrap my arms around her but then I finally do so, only to drop them back down within a second. She pulls back and I see her eyes filling with tears and she mouths the words “It’s okay.” She turns around to wipe a tear off her cheek. She quickly recovers and enters the house, I help her carry two of her bags.
“I made apple juice for you. um, you can sit inside and I’ll, uh, get it.” I say and head into the kitchen. What was I even thinking! This is so fucking awkward! I curse myself once more as I pull out a glass from the cabinet and fill it with apple juice. I put two ice cubes in the glass. That’s enough I guess. I walk into the hall and find her setting boxes on the table.
“Um, Mum, What took you so long?” I ask setting the glass on the table. She picks it up and takes a sip. “Did you make this?” she asks smiling and I nod. “Yeah, I thought I’d bring you some shoes, accessories and make up. You said prom is coming soon. So, yeah.” She shrugs and pats next to her. I move slowly and sit next to her making sure to keep a foot distance between us.
“You didn’t have to-“ I stop when I see her pull out a gorgeous pump out of a box. “Um, Thank you.” I hold it in my hand. it is beautiful, it shines like it’s made out of diamonds. 6 inch heel and a peep toe front, just gorgeous. She pulls out a few accessories and make up products. Hmm, calling her here wasn’t a bad idea after all.
“What about your dress?” she asks looking at me expectantly.
“I, uh, have this dress, the one you gifted me last year. I, um, have not yet seen the dress.” Her mouth opens but closes quickly. The takes a deep breath and stands up.
“Let’s go see it then.” She stands there smiling at me and then I realize she wants me to go with her. Duh. I mentally slap myself for being such a dimwit. “Y-Yeah, it’s, uh, in my room.” She nods in response and we both walk up to my room not speaking a word. Awkward. This is way to awkward.
As I open the door to my bedroom, her eyes move everywhere scanning my bedroom. “You got it renewed?” she asks touching my purple and silver walls. “Yeah, about a year ago.” She just nods and then her eyes land on the back box set on my bed. She gasps recognising the box. She turns her head to me and smiles, “If you fit into that, you will be the most gorgeous girl at prom.” I just smile at her. Wait. Does she mean I’ve become fat?
She picks up the box and smiles looking at it. “It took us a whole day to find this dress for your birthday. Your father was going mad, he was dead tired, but I had to find that one perfect dress.” She puts the box back on the bed and turn to me. “I want you to open it.” She says moving aside.
“Um, okay.” I say and walk towards my bed. I kneel down in front of the box and sigh. I have to do it. Travis would want this, Alex wants this, everyone wants things to go back to normal and I am not going to act selfish this time. Do it, Em. Just do it. Nike. What? I shake all the crazy thoughts away. You know what! Fuck it! I think and pull open the lid of the back box. My eyes go wide. The colour of this dress is beautiful. Red. Deep, bright, red. I touch the material. Silk. “Original silk.” She says sitting next to me.
“Thank you, it is beautiful.” I say looking at her. She smiles and opens her arms wide for me to hug her. As much as I wanted to, I just couldn’t. “Um.” I say and her smile drops. “I understand, let’s take this mother- daughter bonding slow.” I cringe at the word bonding but then I just return a smile. She pulls the dress out of the box and I just can’t take my eyes off it. It’s a long, tube, mermaid dress. It’s got a slight flare at the end and silver studs on its bust. This is the most beautiful dress I have ever seen. The pumps she bought for me matches the dress perfectly.
“Put it on.” She says shoving the dress in my hand. I nod and she leaves the room for me to change. Excited about wearing such a pretty dress I throw my clothes off me. I unzip the dress and quickly push my head through it. It fits! I almost scream out of excitement. Almost... I pull the zip up and turn to look at myself in the mirror. It fits perfectly. My curves look more curvy. I look thinner and taller for some reason. The red suits my fair skin colour.
I don’t know how long I have been standing here admiring myself, I look so different, so pretty. “Emily, does it fit-“ my mum opens the door and stops talking when she looks at me. “Oh darling! You look beautiful!” she exclaims.
“Why thank you!” I say bowing down that makes us both laugh.
