Uneasiness swelled in me. We both gaped at each other in pure horror at the sound of the doorbell. The hairs on my body stood on its ends as an eerie chill went up my spine. I was clueless of what to do, my body feeling completely paralysed. Finally, Gavin broke the eye contact and immediately told me to hide somewhere as he went down to open the door.

After he got out, I frantically searched the whole room for a hiding place. Unfortunately, there was not much furniture for me to hide in. I decided to hide under the bed. I went under the furniture and coughed at the infinite amount of dust located under the bed. I covered my nose to block the dirt. My eyes were watery as I waited in that room, my heart beating furiously in my chest.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Gavin’s POV

“Go and hide. I’ll check the door,” I instructed Violet. Once she nodded, I quickly went out of the room and down the stairs in a hurried manner.

My mind was thinking of the infinite possibilities that might happen. I could feel a drip of sweat running down my forehead. I haven’t been this nervous before. At the end of the stairs I saw Sasha walking to the direction of the door.

“I got this,” she cheered,” I invited a couple of friends over.”

She opened the door, revealing a number of people she referred to as friends. The uneasiness that swelled in my stomach was completely gone. I breathed out in relief.

“Hey where’s the party?” one of them asked. My curiosity rose at this.

“What party? I asked, my head turned towards Sasha.

“You guys are the first ones here. Could you help me though? I need to bring the food out from the kitchen.”

A few nodded, making their way to the kitchen. The rest of them headed to the living room. The only people left near the staircase were Sasha and I.

“It’s just a small party, wanna join us?”

“Ummm no I have to go-“

“Too bad you’re going. Even you don’t go you’ll still have to in the end. You live in this house,” she cut me and demanding me to go to the party. What’s her problem?

She yanked my hand to the living room, revealing her friends. None of them hold a familiar face, making it even more awkward for me.

“Here, socialise,” she whispered in my ear before giving a light push on my back, making me stumble. After regaining my balance, I threw her a glare. I don’t have time for this. God knows what Violet is feeling right now, hiding and waiting for the worst to happen.

“I have to go up,” I walked past her, heading towards the stairs,” you can have your party. I just don’t want to be part of it.

Just then, the bell rang again. Sasha looked at me, telling me to open the door. I rolled my eyes and opened the door, not bothering who was outside. Sasha stood beside me, and welcomed her guests in. I turned around and started going up the stairs, back to the guest room. I could hear Sasha calling my name, wanting me to come back down. Sadly for her, I wasn’t going to.

I have more important things to do.

Violet’s P.O.V

It felt like a thousand years in there. I waited and waited, paranoia consuming me slowly. The door opened, and I gave out a small gasp. Immediately I covered my mouth to avoid making any other noise. The person stood by the door, frozen at his spot.

“Violet?” I heard him called. Oh, it was just Gavin.

“Right here!” I replied, popping my head out of my hiding spot.

His face showed a hint of amusement at my hiding spot. “Out of all the places, you chose to hide there?”

“What’s your problem? It was a good hiding place. Now help me get out.”

He took out his hand to help me. When our hands touched, I felt a surge of electricity flowing through my hand. I looked at Gavin to see if he was feeling to, but his face showed no emotion, so I just decided to forget about it. Once I was up on my feet, I went to sit on the bed.

“Judging from your behaviour, I can safely guess that your dad’s not here?”

He gave a small nod, causing relief to seep in my body.

“There’s still a chance he’d be here though. Like I said he comes to visit sometimes, especially on a day like this.”

“So, any ideas on how to escape?” I inquired.

“I don’t know really. I mean your dad was the one who volunteered you. Going back home will just get you into trouble. Hey, that’s not a bad idea,” he whispered the last part. A part of me knew he was just kidding, but just in case I decided to knock that thought out of him with a pillow.

“Ow! I was just kidding!”

“Just making sure you were,” I gave a sheepish grin before getting back to the topic,” anyway can we just not think about it?”

“Why not?”

“Its just, well, I knew about this a few minutes ago, and I don’t think I can handle it. Its too crazy for me,” I admitted. I brought my knees up to my chest and laid my head on it, closing my eyes. If this was only a dream. Gavin kept quiet, deep in thought.

“I know you don’t want to talk about this, but we need to think of something. What if my dad is really coming today? What would happen then?”

“But still….”

“I think there’s no choice but to get you to the police.”

“Won’t you get caught?”

“I don’t really care. At least I know my dad would also get caught.”

“You know I really don’t get you.”

“What do you mean?”

“Why are you doing this? I mean I know what you said before, but why do that? You don’t gain much from this.”

‘Does it really matter?  I know its going to sound really old schooled but I’ve been an orphan all my life. I rarely knew my parents, sometimes I hate that, not knowing who my parents were and how it feels not to be loved. The period before I met my step dad my life was a complete waste. Nobody loved me. Imagine my joy when I finally had someone. Then after I found out about this disgusting thing he’s been doing, I became furious. I mean, he’s taking these innocent girls, who were taken away from their parents, to play with them. I just couldn’t stand it.”

He stopped at that sentence and sighed furiously.

“But the reason you couldn’t give in to the cops because deep inside you still love him?”

He gave a small nod. I understood what he was saying, all of it.

I patted him on the shoulder to give him reassurance. Suddenly, I heard music coming form downstairs.

“What’s that?”

“Sasha’s having a party downstairs, I’m going down to get a drink,” he said. Once he left, my mind went straight to figuring all of this. Maybe going to the police is the best way. I’ve made my decision.

I’m going to go myself, without Gavin. He’s been through much.

My head turned to the right when the door opened. At first I thought it was Gavin. But when I saw the blonde hair and that jealous face, I knew I was wrong.
