Violet's POV
I typed the number and called. I was so nervous. The phone kept ringing and ringing. Frustrated, I crawl out from under my bed to get signal. I called again, but it just went to voicemail. I was too scared to leave a voicemail, so I just gave up.
Whose number is this?
I rolled my eyes. It was probably just a number that didn't mean anything. I went to my bed and lied down. I really want to get out of here. There's nothing for me to do.
It was evening and I just had dinner with father. He didn't even bother to look up and talk to me, which was weird considering he's been so loving these past few days. I've always wanted to bring up the time when he hung up on me when I called him at Gavin's house.
"I'll be at work tonight. Late shift. Don't go anywhere because I'll know if you do," father interjected, breaking me out of my reverie. I just nodded.
When he left, I went straight to my room and tried calling the number again but to no avail. Feeling bored, I rummaged through the house to see what the hell was going on. What's behind all the mystery? Did my dad really sell me to Gavin's stepdad? Or was Gavin lying? I shook my head. But he was really sweet to me the whole time. Well, except when he stabbed me on the first night. I was so stupid. To think I could fall in love with the guy that stabbed my leg. I walked to father's room that was usually locked. Luckily, I had a pin with me and managed to get in.
I never liked going in to my father's room, because it reminded me so much of what we lost after my mother was gone. I remembered not hearing anything about her from father afterwards. That was when the silence started. That was when I started to become silent. The bedroom looked so plain, with a bed and a desk drawer beside. I rummaged through the drawers and found nothing. It wasn't until I went to the bathroom that was connected to the master bedroom that I found something peculiar. There was a letter that was sent to our house. A handwritten one. Curious, I decided to open it.
It was a page full of handwritten paragraphs. Huh? Who would be writing a letter to us? Perhaps father had a lover. But my heart stopped when I saw the name below. It was mom. I thoroughly searched through the letter to see what was written. Maybe this was an old letter before my mom was gone. But why would she write a letter when she was already here? I thoroughly read through the words. My mother wanted revenge on my father. But for what though? Was it me? I read the last line.
You will pay for what you did to my daughter.
Her daughter? Is father not my father? Before I could think my phone rang. I jumped in shock, thinking for a second that father would be coming home any minute. I rushed to my room and saw the same number that I had been calling all day call me back. Nervously, I answered the phone wishing it was Gavin or anyone that could give me comfort right now.
"Hello? Who is this? Why did you give me your number?" I demanded, my body shaking from all the information I read from that letter. There was a long pause.
"Look, if this is some prank, I swear to god I'll come for yo-"
"Violet? Are you alone?" a woman's voice said softly.
"Who are you? What do you want?"
"Are you alone? Is your dad there with you?" she said again.
"What does it matter to you? And no he went away."
"Good, I'll text you a location for us to meet. I can't believe you're still alive Violet. I have to go now. Meet me at midnight."
"Who are you?!"
"I'm your mother. I'll explain everything later." The phone hung up.
What? My mother. This has got to be unreal. I thought she was dead. I looked at the letter that I was still holding. Tears were running down my cheeks. I don't know what to do. I ran back to father's room to find anything. I saw an old phone of his and decided to charge it for a while. Desperately waiting for it to charge, I looked through the letter over and over again. When it turned on I went through his messages from a long time ago. I saw my mother's name and it was years and years ago. Before she was gone. It was a voice message and I played it and the voice matched hers.
No way.
I rushed back to my room and got a text from my potential mother and saw the address she gave me. It was at a diner 30 mins away from here. But how do I get there. Suddenly, I heard the car noise from the driveway.
Shit, I had to get out of there.
I grabbed my phone and jacket and unlocked the window. It was closed shut. Taking a heavy object, I smashed the window and climbed down. I tried hiding behind the walls and peeked through the window. It was father but he was accompanied by someone.
Oh my god.
It's Gavin's stepfather.
My heart beating so fast I rushed to the front porch to run away. I noticed that they realized something happened in my room. They heard me crash the window. They went up to the second floor and I took this chance to run to my father's car. It was obviously locked, but I knew how to unlock that too. Heh, had a lot of time in my hands with a neglectful father. I turned the engine and quickly drove off, not looking back and not wanting to know what was gonna happen if I stayed.
All I knew was I was going to meet my mom.
