Chapter 12

The journey for a long period of time considering I slept in the car. I felt light tap on my shoulder, turning into a shove. I was too sleepy to react and thus had my cheek against the car window. A groan escaped my lips at the movement.

“Wake up Violet!”

A desperate shout was heard and I immediately woke up.

“What?! What happened?”

“You fell asleep in the car. We’re here now,” Jace announced smoothly.

“Oh,” I looked at the building in front of me. The brick covered walls stood up till the twentieth floor, with five windows at each level. I opened the door and went out; my body trembled at the sudden temperature outside. I warmed my numb fingers as I followed Jace into the building. We reached a lobby. The reception area had a mahogany colour as the table, with a stack of papers and a pen in the middle, along with a black coloured telephone at the end.

We sauntered our way to the receptionist and I waited as Jace handled the admin stuff. I stood there, looking as if I was listening to their conversation. Instead, my mind drifted to the night before, thinking about Gavin and also going through my decision of going straight to the police. The thought of leaving Gavin like that and putting him into jail was disheartening. Not to mentioned he did other stuff too, like killing an officer the night he kidnapped me. Surprisingly, the thought did not send shivers to my spine, like how it used to when I first met him.

Just then, two people came into my view. A father and a daughter. They walked happily out of the building, holding hands, a smile plastered on both their faces. The dad said something to his daughter and she gave a quirky, cheery laugh. I looked away immediately, feeling envy that I didn’t had that kind of childhood. That I didn’t have that kind of dad. I could picture his face when I was a little girl.

He used to give this huge, warm smile. However, after I found out about the truth, I really have no idea if he was just faking it, if it was merely an act in front of my mother and me.

A tap on my shoulder brought me back to reality.

“Hey, the room’s all set, come on. Follow me,”Jace said.

Willingly, I followed. We came to the lift lobby, where there were only two lift entrances. He pressed the button and waited for the lift to come down.

“Where are we by the way?” I inquired, looking around the lobby, taking in the cream coloured walls and the mahogany wood.

“Gavin and I share a room. Well not literally but we both own an apartment over here. Since we leave quite far from town, we decided to have a home near it. For example, we both need to attend to school and sometimes he needs to go for work in town. It’s nearer you see, so it makes it even more convenient,” he explained.

The lift doors opened and we came in, followed by a question from me.

“That’s it? You want to have an apartment just so that you can go to school?”

A sense of mock could be heard from my question, seeing how Jace acts in school. As we talked I looked at the number of floors on this building. It goes up all the way up to the twentieth floor, just as how I counted at when I was outside. He went ahead and pressed the fourteenth button.

“Not only that of course. Sometimes when we invite friends over or what not, or you know, girls,” he quipped, winking at the last word.  I rolled my eyes at his comment.

“As if you have any girls over,” I countered, earning an embarrassed blush on his cheeks. So much for showing off to girls.

“At least I don’t whisper Gavin when I sleep.”
