After packing her things, Emily meets Cass and I in the front hall. I have Cass's over-night bag over my shoulder and he stands next to me with one hand in mine and the other with his thumb in his mouth. A strange looking plush sitting in the bend of his elbow. Why does it look so familiar? It's a little brown teddy bear with a little red bow tie around its neck. It looks to be a little older than he is. I know I've seen it before.

He looks up at me for a moment before bringing his eyes back to his mother who it fumbling with her keys, trying to lock the door. Cass then lets go of my hand and walks up to her and tugs at the tail of her gray cotton cover. She looks down at him and he pulls the little bear from under his arm before handing it to her. She takes and kisses his hand before turning back to lock the door, which she does with ease after being handed the bear.

"So, shall we?" She exhales heavily, standing upright and taking Cass's hand in hers.

"Yeah. Lets go." I say pushing my curiosity aside for the time being. I lead them down the stairwell and to the where Emily removes Cass's car seat from her care and sets it up in mine. After securing it properly she lifts Cass into the seat and straps him in tight. I pay close attention to every motion of her fingers and take note of each step she goes through before blowing a little fart-kiss on his cheek so I'll know what to do when it's just him and I on a day out.

He laugh high pitched and from the deepest part of his belly as he wraps his little arms around her face, pulling her closer to blow a fart-kiss on her cheek in return. She smiles back before pulling his hands down and shutting the door. She gets into the passenger seat and sets the little brown teddy from before on her lap after strapping herself in.

Her and Cass have such a strong bond I find myself slightly jealous. I want a bond like that with him. If she would've told me about him maybe I would have. Better yet, if I wasn't such a fucking airhead I would've gotten that chance sooner.

"Luke, are you alright?" I hear her voice break through my thoughts and I refocus on reality.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I assure her before getting in the driver seat. I start the car and pull onto the road.

During he drive Emily and I hear Cass start coughing in the backseat. My heart rate starts to pick up and I feel the panic rising in my body. But Emily on the other hand looks so calm and collected. No panic at all. She turns in her seat and turns in the overhead light.

"Cass, honey, are you okay?" She asks and with every struggle for breath Cass takes my heart pounds harder against my chest. "Honey, breath." Worry starts to rise in her voice and the panic hits me like a fright train. "Cass?" She shouts when his coughs start to get wet and gurgly. "Luke pull over." She says and I can't do it fast enough.

I gun it to the side of the the road and nearly slam my foot down on the breaks. When we stop she hops out of the car and hurries to the back seat to get Cass out. I open my door and run around to see Emily knelt down with Cass bent over her knee and patting his back.

"C'mon, love! Let it out! Puke it out, Cass!" Her calm tone has completely dropped and in its place panic and worry. Probably more than me. I'm stood here frozen, not knowing at all what to do. After a few more pats to his back Cass finally pukes up whatever it was he was choking on before letting out a large breath of relief in the form of deep cries. Emily pulls him up from her knee and hugs him close to sooth him.

"Oh, my love, I'm so sorry. Are you alright, sweetie?" She asks with sympathy clear in her voice to which Cass continues crying in response. "I know, I know. It scared mummy too. It's okay." She continues as she peaks his cheek with kisses.

I'm still stood in shock but at least now I can form words.

"Is he okay?" I stupidly ask.

"Yeah, he's okay. He tried to swallow a piece of hard candy he found on the seat." She says placing another kiss on his cheek. He finally calmed down.

"I'm so sorry. I should've cleaned the car out this morning." I start but she stops me with a firm "Hush, Luke".

"It's not your fault. This has happened a few times in my own car. It's okay. I'm just gonna ride in the back with him, yeah?" She assures me and I agree. She rubs my shoulder before walking past me. I rush to help her but she politely waves me off.

When we get back on route to the hotel I can't stop myself from looking in the rear view mirror every five seconds.
