life leaves scars

Stones, blades, and the world
Cut us and bruise us
Then the scars sink in and
We're never the same.

Biting words, careless actions, and invasive thoughts and deeds
Cut us deep and bruise our hearts
And the scars sink deeper than our skin
Down into our bones and the core of us
Changing who we are

People see the scars on our skin and express concern and try to help.
Why are the deeper scars, the life-altering wounds, so much harder to see, to ask about, to help with?

With tattered and scarred flesh and bruised and broken hearts we embark,
We face the world the way we were taught to
We follow the path laid out for us from infancy
The path paved with blood and sweat and suffering and loneliness.
