the burglars looked at each other and dashed out of my room. i got up from the floor and ran to the other side of my room, where the window was. i opened the blinds and there was a flare of red and blue lights on the road. behind them was a police car, which stopped right on the sidewalk at the end of my driveway. i ran back to Jonah and tried waking him up once more, which still didn't work.

i ran out of my room and went downstairs. the men were still standing by the door.

"GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!" i yelled this so loud.

one of the men cursed under his breath and they both walked out the front door. i walked out behind them to make sure they didn't escape. when we got to the police car i started talking.

"thank you for coming." i said, my voice still shaking.

"of course. we've had multiple reports about break-ins here in the past few weeks. it must've been these same men, and they kept on getting away with it." one of the cops said.

"the masked one tried to hurt me but then my friend saved me and he got punched instead. and he isn't waking up." thinking about Jonah made me start to cry again.

"okay. don't worry, we'll help you guys. and this boy, is he your boyfriend or just your friend?"

"oh, he's just a close friend." but who knows? maybe that'll change one day.

"okay. can you lead me inside to where he is?" he asked.

the other cop was filing a report or something, he'd already handcuffed the men, and they were now sitting in the police car.

"yeah." i started walking up the driveway with the first cop behind me.

when we were in my room, Jonah was still the same as when i left. the cop knelt down and tried to figure out what was wrong. the only thing i noticed was that his eye was black from the punch. i sat on my bed, waiting.

"okay. so he does have a couple bruises. but something else could've happened that i can't find out. so he might have to go to the doctor or hospital."

my eyes widened.

"what?"

"you heard me," he said, "is there anyone i can tell?"

"yeah, his house is right beside mine, on the left."

"okay. i'll talk to his parents." the cop got up from the floor and left to go to Jonah's house and tell his mom what happened.

i thought this would be a good time to call my parents. i got my phone out of my pocket and called my mom.

"hi, honey. whats up?"

"mom..." i couldn't finish my sentence, my voice was too shaky.

"Sadie? are you okay?"

"no. i'm, people came."

"what people?"

"t-they broke i-in."

"what? oh my god! are they still in the house? are you alone?" at this point i could hear her open the car door, getting ready to come back home.

"no, Jonah's w-with me."

"and are you okay? is he okay? tell me everything."

"so about half an hour after i came home from school i heard knocking on the front door. i knew it wasn't solicitors because they don't bang on the door, they ring the bell, and these people didn't ring the bell. i got scared, so then Jonah came here through the back door. they kept knocking then finally they broke in."

"yeah? and what did they do?"

"they walked around the house, then they finally came upstairs and into my room. i got a knife before from the kitchen, and Jonah and i hid in the closet in my room. one of the men found us and pushed me down. Jonah tried defending me then he got pushed too. he bruised his arm and then got back up. i got up too and the man was about to punch me. then Jonah..."

"it's okay baby. tell me what happened next." even her voice was getting shaky.

"then Jonah threw himself in front of me to save me, and he got punched in the face. hard." my voice was trembly and i felt a lump in my throat.

"oh my, is he okay?"

"no! he's unconscious and i called the police before. they arrested the men and the other cop said he might have to go to the doctor or even the hospital." i put my phone in my lap, and i let more tears out. they were starting to fall on my phone screen.

"do Carry and Timothy know about this?"

"the cop's telling them."

"okay. i'll call your father and tell him to rush home. i'm on my way too. don't worry, Jonah will be fine soon. i love you."

"okay, bye."

i didn't say 'i love you' back. i was worrying about something else. i put my phone on my bed and looked back at Jonah, who's eye was turning black. i was still trying to process this in my brain right now. i was trying to convince myself that this was all a dream, and that i'm sleeping right now. but i'm awake, and i keep waking up. this is all real. and i don't know why it had to be my house. this was my fault because i asked Jonah to come here. if i had just left him alone, then it would've been me with a black eye instead. because he never deserved this.

i was getting exhausted from everything that had just happened. i yawned and rested my head beside Jonah's. i didn't care if the floor was dirty or hard or cold. i only had one thing on my mind right now, the fact that one of my best friends, and crush, is lying unconscious in my room just because of something that i caused.
