Chapter 13

He started walking towards me. I told the kids "I will be right back", and I went to go meet him about half way. "I'm a father" he said kind of mad and shocked. "Yeah you are" "why didn't you tell me" "I sent letters Matt, I tried calling except you changed your number" "so Shay wasn't kidding" "no she wasn't she was telling you the truth". He nodded, and said "I never got the letters Gabby otherwise I would have come back the moment I knew for sure you where pregnant, and I would have been a father to my kids" "it's not to late to be a good father Matt" "they probably hate me" "o I just told them their father was away on work, and couldn't come home" "why" he asked confused on why I would lie to my kids. "I don't want them to hate you, and believe me. When Shay told me what happened when she came to get you I told my self after they are born I will come to Florida just to slap you upside the head for being an idiot". "I would've understood" "want to meet them" "can I?" he asked not knowing if I were going to let him meet them. "Come on" I said having him follow me. "Kids come here" I called them they came running, and right as I was about to speak Alex the smartest of the three asked "mom who is that" she said pointing to Matt. "Andy, Caleb, Alex this is your father Matt Casey" I said introducing them to him. "Is he going to come home with us mom" asked my daughter. "Yes I am I won't leave you guys I promise" Matt said. "Mom can we all go out to eat with dad" "up to your dad" I said as I sneaked a look at Matt. He was smiling. "I would love to have dinner with you three" he said. They ran to the truck "they called me dad" "well you are their dad". We met at the best burger place that Matt told me about. We arrived and found Matt right away "hey" I greeted him. Andy sat on the inside of the booth on the same side as Matt and Alex. I sat by my son Caleb. "So Alex can you tell me about you" Matt said to his daughter. "i am twelve I run cross country, and am on varsity. I also do high jump in track, and field, and I am on varsity. I hate anything girly" she said looking at her father. "Wow that's very cool" he said "what about you Andy" "I play baseball, basketball, and football. I am the oldest out of all of us. And if anybody hurts my baby sister they mess with me". "A protective big brother keep that up bud. So Caleb what about you". "I am the second oldest I am in the same sports as Andy. And the last person to hurt my baby sister got thrown in a trash can by me, Andy, and Uncle Kelly" "I am so grateful she has you two" Matt said looking at the boys. 

Dinner went very well the kids love Matt, and have even made it a habit of calling him dad. I was going to climb in the truck when Casey pulled me to the side. "Gabby I swear I never got the letters if I did I would have come back no matter what" "it's okay" "Gabby a month after I got here to get over you I went out with my assistant she knew about us" "wait Matt who handles your mail, and why are you telling me this" "my assistant, and because I still love you, and I want to be with you and the kids, but I broke up with her two months after I started dating her" "could she have thrown them out" "if she did I will get to the bottom of it" "it's okay" "I will get back to Chicago as soon as possible" "okay" "Gabby I want to be with all four of you as a family, with you as my wife" "okay" "okay" he said happily. "How long are you here for?" "until next week Friday" "I will spend every moment with you and the kids". We made plans for me and the kids to go with him to work till noon when he comes to the funeral with us. 

THE NEXT DAY

We arrived at the fire house, and the kids saw Matt right away. Alex was the first to reach him. When she finally reached him she gave him one of her biggest hugs. "Hey guys" he said sounding happy. "Hey" I said the kids were looking around in his office so me and Matt were talking. "So I told the big guys here I am leaving." "have you found a place yet" "nope,but I will keep looking". "You don't have to you can live with me and the kids if you want" "are you sure" "well of course I am the kids would be thrilled" "where you living now?" he asked. "I bought a small house close to work" "that reminds me I am getting my job back at 51 as Lieutenant of 81" "that's amazing Matt truly" "the day you go back I get to go with you" "your flying your things" "no I am driving" "we will ride with you" I said when I said it he gave his smile. For the first time in almost 13 years Matt grabbed my waist and pulled me into a kiss. We kissed for about ten seconds then he hugged me, and whispered in my ear "love you" "love you to Matt". That's when the three kids made this a group hug. For the first time the family we started years ago was complete. 

THE NEXT WEEK FRIDAY

Today me and the kids are riding back with Matt to Chicago. We refunded the tickets for the plane. It was a 17 hour drive home. We had been in the car for two of the 17 hours and the kids where already asleep, so me and Matt where decided to talk. "So Gabby what is new with you beside the kids" "I made it to squad, and 51 is getting another squad truck that I will run, and Herman is getting the new truck, and you are taking 81" "wow you have done really great for yourself" "so have you" "have the kids been on a rig at all" "yup in the summer they always go on ride along's" "that is great" "so I guess I have to say this Gabby. I am still sorry for cheating on you years ago" "it doesn't matter anymore Matt I love you, and I am sorry for everything" "you have no reason to be sorry Gabby" "neither do you Matt". The whole ride the kids slept the entire way, and Matt and I talked the entire way. When we reached my house he carried his daughter to bed, and I carried the boys to bed. We brought everything in the house . The next thing I remember is cuddling with Matt on the couch. I must have fallen asleep, because I woke up on the couch in Matt's arms. My family is complete I have three lovely kids, and I have an amazing boyfriend.
