Chapter 17

I was sitting in my hospital room waiting for Chief, Matt, and Kelly. The accident was scary for me to be honest I thought I was never going to see my kids again, I was never going to see my husband again, never tell him I love him once more. But now I can I can see my husband and kids, I can tell them I love them once more. I know when I took this job it meant taking risks, and I will put my life on the line for anyone in my house, or even a random stranger. And at least if I die I know I died trying to help someone because that is my job.

Chief, Matt, and Kelly walk in which brings me out of thinking they all hug me and tell me they are glad I am okay. "How's Shay" I ask scared of what the answer  might be "she is okay, and recovering well arguing with doctors like always" said Kelly. I am glad to know my best friend is okay I can't go through another death of one of my friends or family. Once they said hello they left leaving it just me and Matt. He put his hands in his pockets and had an upset look on his face "Gabby" he said sadly. I didn't know what was wrong. "Matt what is it" I asked worried he was going to leave me I know it sounds crazy, but people have always been in and out of my life I can't lose my husband. "We lost the baby" he finally said I couldn't speak. I started crying, and Matt being Matt pulled me into his arms, and whispered in my ear. "Hey we can still have more kids all that matters is that you are okay. We can have more kids, but I can't get another Gabby". That was the sweetest thing he has ever said to me. Somehow that made me calm it made me happy to know that he loved me so much. Just as we pulled apart all three kids ran in first Andy, then Alex, followed by Caleb. Not one of them said a word they all just climbed on the bed, and brought us all into a group hug. Alex was able to go home today so Matt is taking them home his first time looking after the three of them all by himself. Tomorrow I have a feeling their may be some funny stories coming from him. I am not saying he is a bad dad he just hasn't been put with three teenagers by himself. I feel sorry for him he is a great dad, but I know the kids will be a challenge he has never faced alone. Me I have faced it alone for years, so I am prepared, but Matt has no idea what is waiting for him.

THE NEXT DAY

I was laying in bed eating when Matt walked in he didn't seem angry or scared. "Hey how were the kids" I asked him hopping he would say great. "Well the boys would go to bed unless they had a way of knowing Alex was okay so they took watch every two hours switching. So while one made sure Alex was okay the other was asleep. They did that for 8 hours" he said. I started laughing "what" he asked sounding confused. "The kids it's amazing how the boys will do anything to protect their little sister" he smiled, and nodded his head which meant he agreed. "Also I found out that they won't eat cooked peas" he said looking at me "oh I am sorry I should have warned you they refuse to eat cooked peas". I was holding in my laughter I knew they would give him a little bit of a hard time, because he is new to them still, and even though he is their dad they will be evil to him. We sat their talking for a few more hours until Matt went home to be with the kids.

FOUR DAYS LATER

Today I am going back to work I was released from the hospital yesterday. I am back on squad, because a new guy is filling in on ambo, for Brett. Also 81 is getting their new candidate today. Me and Matt drove to the firehouse when we pulled up I noticed something off everyone was here already. We got out of the car and walked up the driveway to the engine bay hand in hand. When we opened the door everyone popped out from inside the rigs to say welcome back. It made me so happy to know that I had a family again. I had a family that cared about my well being. "Awe guys you didn't have to" "yes we did" said Herman "you are family, and we almost lost one of our members. Your like a daughter to me Gabby we didn't have to, but we wanted to" he added. I knew I started to cry not because I was sad, but because I was touched. They all hugged me and I knew form then on these people I could trust they are my family. Once we all separated the bells went off.

SQUAD 3 PERSON TRAPPED 6286 WILLOW ROAD

Me and the rest of my crew ran to the trucks. We suited up not knowing what to expect. On the way to the scene Severide turned around and asked "How you feeling Gabby" "couldn't be better Lieutenant". It was true I was great at the top of my game. I was ready for anything this call had to throw at me. We arrived on scene, and a man was trapped on fence. It was a easy call, but at the end for some reason the guy said "banana" I don't know why, but it made me think of Shay. We had to call a different ambo because the fill in paramedics for 61 where running late. Once the man was transported we were about to head back to the station when we got called out again.

SQUAD 3 PROTECTION DETAIL 3131 WEST MILWAUKEE AVE.

We got back in the rig. Protection detail usually is just us protecting a person from crowds usually famous people. We arrived on scene for protection detail we had to get a highly hated criminal transported from the Jail to district 21 headquarters. We surrounded him as best as we could using force to keep people from killing him. Yes he did commit horrible crimes that took the lives of 15 firefighters and 3 paramedics, but it was our job to save, and protect everyone. No matter what they had done. We got the criminal transported to district 21 headquarters with no problem what so ever. As we pulled up to the gas station to fill up 131 came to this I knew wasn't going to end well or the way I wanted it to.
