Cynthia Murphy didn't expect a sudden impatient knock at the door. She opened it and Y/N stood on the wooden porch completely drenched. The girl's voice shook a little bit she kept it steady."Um, dear? Is there something you need?" Cynthia asked, putting on a small warm smile. Y/N nodded.
"I'm Connor's friend, Y/N." she replied. "I found his jacket and I'm just gonna return it to him."
"Oh!" she had a surprised but happy tone. There was a faint glow in the woman's eyes. "Please come in, it's probably chilly out there." Y/N entered the big house, feeling a little awkward because she was soaked and was making the clean floor wet.
"Connor's room is upstairs and the is last bedroom down the hall. You won't miss it." Cynthia explained. "I'll have to go to run some errands, but you're welcome to stay as long as you like. Do your parents know you're here?"
"Uh, sure." Y/N lied before speed walking up the stairs.
Connor
I was startled when my bedroom door burst open. I was more surprised when Y/N flew in.
"So knocking doesn't exist anymore?" I asked.
She flung my sweater at my face and knocked the joint out of my mouth before I even had a chance to greet her. "Nice to see you too, Y/N." My voice was muffled under the sweater. It fell off my face and I was left facing a soaked Y/N, looking pissed as ever. She stood at the foot of my bed and her hand seemed to be clenching something.
Y/N threw her backpack down as she asked "What is this, Connor!?" she held out a slightly wet sticky note from my dealer. I didn't understand, what was surprising about it? She knows I do drugs and shit.
I stood up and grabbed the note from her hand. "It's from my dealer and none of your business." I confronted, "You're my best friend and stuff, but you don't have to snoop around my sweater."
"It fell out!" Y/N replied. I've never seen her like this. She's trying so hard to hide the fact she's fuming.
"Then what's the big deal!?" I asked.
She walked over. "She calls herself Pirate, right?"
My eyes widened, "How do you know they're female?"
"Does she have h/c hair? Does she have an eyepatch? Does she have a scar on her upper lip?"
Holy shit.
"You're asking a lot of question there." My voice rose a little and I leaned over, but she didn't care.
"Well-"
"HOW DO YOU KNOW MY DEALER, Y/N!?"
"SHE'S MY MOM!" She finally blurted out. Y/N rubbed her head anxiously.
"At least I'm pretty sure she is."We both stood there wide-eyed, waiting for the other to finally say something to break the uncomfortable silence. Y/N slowly handed me the note and I quickly took it from her grasp.
"Do you still owe her?" Y/N asked. I stared at the paper.
"What?"
"Do you still owe her, Connor?" Her voice was demanding. I sighed and shoved the note in my pocket. I met her stressed eyes and I swear I could see a tear fall.
"Yes, I do. Twenty dollars. I had to give it to her three weeks ago and lord knows how she'll react when I show up with it later."
"Oh my god, will she hurt you?" Y/N's voice sounded worried. I shook my head.
"No, she won't." I quickly assured. "I'm taller than her, so I'm intimidating enough."
Y/N sighed as she forced a laugh. The laugh turned into a slight whimper and sob. I looked at Y/N worriedly as she wiped the tears that were violently streaming down her face.
I shook my head. "Shit, I should've- I'm sorry Y/N."
Y/N spoke quickly.
"No! It's not you, you didn't know about any of this. It's just that this whole thing is stupid and I shouldn't be agonizing over this because it's dumb!""Y/N-"
"And now I'm yelling at you as if this thing was your fault and it's not! Shit.." Her voice shattered, and so did my heart when I realized this was the first time I've seen Y/N cry.
"I'm sorry Connor." She finally said as she covered her face with her hands.
It made me wonder what other heavy burdens does she have to carry on her shoulders when she's so close to falling apart.
Awkwardly, I wrapped my arms around Y/N and hugged her. It was the only thing I could do since I wasn't sure how to comfort her. I expected her to shake me off. Instead, she quickly returned the embrace and held on to me tightly, fearing something might happen if she lets go. I rested my chin on her wet hair.
"This is so stupid, I'm sorry." Y/N chuckled through her muffled cries. All I could do was hold on to her. Suddenly, I remembered the statement she said the day we started talking.
"I know someone who's life was destroyed by that shit."
"Y/N?" I spoke.
"Hm?" She lifted her head to view my face. I used my thumb to wipe away the tears. "What is it?" She asked. I hated seeing her so upset.
"Hey, listen, maybe I'm not the best with words and maybe I'm the worst person to talk to, but I'm here. You're not alone Y/N, and for fucks sake don't ever think for a second you are."
A faint smile grew on her face and my heart went a mile a minute. She placed her ear over my chest and sighed. "Since when did you become a motivational speaker?" Y/N asked.
"Didn't I just say I wasn't the best with words?"
Y/N lifted her head again. "You said maybe you're not the best with words."
I laughed as the small glow in her beautiful but mysterious eyes came back. "Okay smart-ass."
It was obvious she was still stressed and worried.
"I'll be fine." She said softly. "I can't promise anything, but I'm good for now."
I looked at her anxiously. She clearly didn't want to talk or think about it anymore, but I couldn't help but worry.
"You can stow away the seriosity now." Y/N said, her voice still shaken a little. "Of all people, I'm not someone you should worry about."
I raised an eyebrow, "Of all people, I should worry about you because I'm your best friend and I care about you." The corner of her lips raised into a small smile.
I sighed, "Do you want a towel?"
"What?"
I let myself smile. "You just dramatically ran in the rain and now you're getting my floor wet."
Her eyes widened as she quickly nodded. "Oh, uh, sure."
A/N: take a shot every time I use a "-" in this chapter.
