Dream Smashers: Book 1

1.Road Trip

"Hey Greg wanna take a break?" Miguel asked

I was deeply focused in the road since I've been driving for the past six hours, focused in getting to our destination , seeing bright green trees, followed by bright colorful towns, then back back to trees. Trying my best to stay awake while my younger brother, Miguel ,slept in the passenger and the twins ,Ramsey and Irene, focused in the back on their switch.

"Greg?"

I was shocked back in to reality
"Huh? What?"I asked

"Do you want to take a break while I take over?" Miguel asked with a slight concern

"Ye....yeah I'd appreciate it, let us just get to the next stop and we'll switch" Greg said with a slight exhaustion.

I had been driving since 7 to visit our old cabin in Tennessee, the five of us been wanting to get away from the city life for a good time, thought only four if us are heading out right away, my older brother, David, is still back in Texas working but he said he'll meet us up here in a few weeks so I'm placed in charge being the second oldest, and although it's been quiet except for the quiet button mashing in the back from Ramsey and Irene playing Smash Bros.

"You sure? We can just stop on the side of the road and I'll take over" Miguel pushed

"NO!" I blurted out scaring Miguel and the twins

"I mean no....crap sorry didn't mean to yell at you guys"

"Are you okay Greg" Ramsey asked putting down the switch

"Yeah I'm fine"

"Then why did you yell all of a sudden" Irene asked concerned

"You guys were too young to remember , Miguel was barely 2 and you guys weren't concived yet so It was just Me and David" Greg explained

"I don't even remember it completely myself I was barely even 5 David was 8 and plus it was nearly 20 years ago while Mom and Dad were still with us"

As I said that it got quiet and everyone had meaningful faces, trying to hide how hurt they felt about me bringing up the topic of our parents. Around 5 years ago while I was in my 3rd year of college ,with Miguel getting ready for graduation , and twins just sophomores. I had got a call that my Dad was in the hospital and it wasn't looking good. My heart sank and I left the university as my class started

"Gomez get back in your seat" Dr.Rose called but I ignored her and kept ruining

"Trevino what's going on with him" she asked my best friend Edward

"Its........its a family emergency" Edward said worried about me

"Hey Greg, what are you doing in town? you aren't suppose to be here for another 2 weeks?" Miguel asked

"Are the twins coming?"

"Oh they're on there way , you seem concerned?" Miguel asked a little worried

"I'll tell you when the twins get in"

"Yay Greg's in town, Greg's in town" the twins chanted as they jumped in

"Greg tell us what's going on" Miguel asked making the twins get worried

".....Its about Dad ........he's in the ER" I said with a serious face.

They looked scared as I took off and headed for the hospital. I pulled out my phone

"Miguel call David for me please" I asked trying to keep strong

He grabbed my phone and dialed our older brothers number

"What do you want" David asked

He always acted like this with me , but we both knew it meant nothing bad it's just how he acted with me

"Did you get the call? " I asked switching the call over you my smartwatch so I don't cause a crash.

"About" David asked sensing the urgency in my voice

"Dad's in the hospital"

"..... I'll be right there" he said hanging up

We arrived at the hospital shortly and ran into the ER finding our mother with our grandma

"Oh my babies" she said crying and falling into my arms

"Relax mom it's gonna be okay"I said trying to calm her down but it wasn't working

"Gran gran how's he looking" Miguel asked

"Not well ,the doctors said he had a massive stroke and it doesn't seem good"

"Greg, sweety ,what are you doing here? weren't you at school?" Mother asked

"I left when granny called me" I told her

"Why would you do that ? what would your professor do " she asked concerned

"Its fine my grades are good, plus Edward has my back either way" I explained ,making her relax

"Greg where's Davey? is he coming?" Gran gran asked

"Yeah I called him on the way over here, he's on his way"

Just as I said that he busted in through the doors

"Perfect timing" Irene said looking over at the sudden noise

"Mom , gran gran, what's going on?" David asked with a scared tone

"Dad had a stroke and he's been unconscious for 7 hours" Mom explained

"Wait when did this happen?  it takes me three hours to get in town from Commerence" I asked confused

"It happened at night, I dropped the kids off at grandma's and took him to the hospital. But at the time he was having chest pains" Mom explained

The five of us just stared with hope in our eyes

3 months have passed and the doctors tried everything but the stroke ultimately killed his brain.

"So the choice is on you Mrs.Gomez, you can choose to pull the plug or keep him alive but with a machine"
Doctor Brown asked

"I..i I don't know" she said falling into my arms sobbing loudly

The five of us stared with sorrow until David broke the silence

"Pull the plug doctor" he said serious

"David what are you doing?" I asked slightly annoyed

"Put yourself in dad's position, all of us love him and want him to stay with us forever but we know he can't....... and sadly it's his time" he said very hurt "yes we can keep him alive but if we were to do that, we'd basically be keeping him alive for us to be happy, but he's not gonna be happy , he's just going to be a vegetable and none of us want that" David finished starting to tear up

"He's right" mom said standing up "as much as I love your father I rather have him be at peace then be forced to be a vegetable...........doctor ...... You can pull the plug" she said with pain in her voice

"Alright then you can say your goodbyes and then we'll let him rest" doctor brown said as he wrote it down in his files.
